Barrel Brings 3D To Your iPhone’s Springboard | Cydia Store

Barrel is a new tweak available in the Cydia Store at $2.99 which doesn’t do anything particularly useful, but adds an incredibly cool 3D effect to the iPhone’s Springboard.

If you’re familiar with Linux and the Compiz desktop effect, you know what I’m talking about: instead of swiping between pages, you’ll swipe between different sides of a cube. In the tweak’s settings, you can customize the effect so that homescreen icons will appear to be either inside our outside the cube. You Can Use Find My iPhone For Free On Older Devices

Apple claims only iPhone 4, iPad, or 4th generation iPod touch owners can use Find My iPhone for free by logging in with their Apple IDs. It turns out, though, that enabling support on older devices is fairly simple. Lifehacker reports:

Once you’ve activated Find My iPhone on a newer iOS device, just repeat the steps above on a pre-2010 iOS device and it should work like a charm. I tested the process by turning on Find My iPhone on an iPad, then enabling it on an iPhone 3G.

Piece of cake. Just borrow an “officially supported” device from a friend, log in with your credentials to activate the feature, then delete the account from your friend’s device.

iOS 4.2: Our Complete Walkthrough

A few minutes ago Apple announced the release of iOS 4.2 today. The download links aren’t live yet, and we speculate the engineers at Cupertino will flip the switch at 10AM PST.

Rumor: European Carriers Force Apple To Give Up On Integrated SIM Plans

According to a rumor that surfaced in October, Apple was looking for a way to develop an integrated iPhone SIM-card that would allow customers to easily subscribe to a carrier’s plan and easily switch between networks when travelling abroad. An integrated SIM-card would cut carriers out of an important process of the iPhone purchase system: retail.

With such as SIM-card, Apple, and only Apple, would sell iPhones while carriers would just play the role of “service providers”. Similar rumors surfaced last week, together with reports of concerns about this approach. Read more

AppShopper 1.3 Is The Best App Discovery Tool for iOS. Period.

There are dozens of apps in the App Store that promise to revolutionize the way you discover apps. Sort of meta, but this seems to be Silicon Valley’s latest dream: to simplify the way users find interesting apps they might like. Too bad basing the old App Store navigation system on poor Facebook and Twitter integration won’t make the process any simpler: indeed, it’ll just add an extra useless layer that most users will get tired of in a matter of minutes. iTunes Connect Mobile App Updated with iPad Support, Retina Graphics, iBookstore Stats

iTunes Connect Mobile is an app for iOS developers that allows them to check on their Apple dev account to see detailed information about the apps currently on sale in the App Store. It’s basically a mobile extension of the Sales & Trends section in iTunes Connect. The app can display data via table or graph format and it comes with filters and menus to restrict a search to specific countries and periods of time.

The latest 1.1 update, released last night, introduces support for the iPad (the app has gone universal), Retina graphics, multitasking and support for iBookstore providers.

A must-have for iOS developers, available for free here. Also, developers: iTunes Connect won’t be available starting December 23rd through the 28th.

White iPhone 4s Being Sold … In China?

Giz-China has posted a report and photos claiming that genuine white iPhone 4s are being sold in China’s grey market. What is a grey market you ask? It’s a system involving the secret but not illegal (black markets) sale of goods at excessive prices. Many unofficial resellers in China have a large amount of these and are selling them online.

Woz: Apple Had A Phone Ready In 2004, Android Will Win The Race [Updated]

Steve Wozniak is that kind of guy who has no problems in saying exactly what he thinks. He co-founded Apple, but criticizing Apple and talking about the great features of Android OS isn’t a problem for him.

That’s exactly what happened in an interview with Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf: as Engadget reports, the Woz apparently revealed that Apple was collaborating with a “well-known Japanese consumer electronics company in 2004 to develop a phone that was ahead of its time”. That would be the iPhone that was released in 2007, and it’s interesting that Steve Jobs and his team had the thing ready in 2004 and decided to put it on the shelf for 3 years. Perhaps multi-touch wasn’t ready? Perhaps because of high manufacturing costs? Who knows. Read more
