Layar Reality Browser Updated to Version 4.0

Layar was one of the first “augmented reality” apps in Apple’s App Store before all the competitors showed up. It’s had a few UI overhauls and the most recent is nice. Layar shows what is around you by displaying real time digital information on top of the real world as seen through the camera of your mobile phone. Layar augments the real world as seen through your mobile phone, based on your location. The idea is simple: Layar works by using a combination of the mobile phone’s camera, compass and GPS data to identify the user’s location and field of view, retrieve data based on those geographical coordinates, and overlay that data over the camera view.

What’s New in Version 4.0:

  • Layers now support new interactive features
  • The Camera View interface has been redesigned
  • The Camera View is stabilized using the gyroscope on iPhone 4.

The iPhone Heart Monitor

Modern technology has changed so much in just the last few years; everything has gotten smaller, cheaper and better. It’s really amazing, when I was a child in the 80s, everything was still analog, big and had square edges. A 2 foot by 1 foot ‘ghetto blaster’ was considered portable music and a portable TV was black and white and weighed 20 pounds.

The future is here now and Apple’s iPhone is the flux capacitor to the future, or at least in this case an Electrocardiography device (ECG). This is by far one of the coolest implementations of an iPhone and a third party accessory. For one thing, it’s not just for the medical world, it will also be a consumer accessory as well; the iphonECG is going to officially be announced ay CES next week. Attach the iphonECG case, open the monitoring app, and place the contacts against your chest (heart). Remember when I said everything gets “smaller, cheaper and better”? Here’s one of the first ECG devices ever created.

Angry Birds Maker: “Apple Will Be Number One For A Long Time”

Peter Vesterbacka, the “mighty eagle” at Rovio, thinks Apple is going to sit at the number one spot of mobile platforms for a long time. Angry Birds is, quite possibly, the most successful game that has ever landed in the App Store: more than 50 millions of copies sold, an equally popular iPad version that has been recently updated, a rumored sequel already in the works which will feature a “pig point of view”, Angry Birds cases at Apple Store. If that’s not enough, Rovio is launching its own pig-based mobile payment system.
