djay for iPhone Now Available, iPad Version Updated

djay by Algoriddim is an excellent music-mixing application for the iPad we reviewed in December that, with a beautiful user interface design and powerful features, managed to become the top solution for all those looking for a serious, yet accessible DJ solution on the tablet. Today Algoriddim is releasing an updated version of djay for iPad, as well as a brand new iPhone counterpart that brings the djay experience to smaller screens without compromising the usability and design of the app.

First off, djay for iPad got a major update (version 1.1) that adds auto, manual and bounce looping, 3 additional cue points and an improved library search to find songs that you’d like to mix. The update also adds compatibility with Bluetooth audio devices, extended support for AIFF and WAV files thanks to iOS 4.3 and a series of bug fixes meant to address the memory issues of the app. We wonder how well will this thing run on an iPad 2. djay for iPad is a $19.99 download in the App Store.

djay for iPhone, on the other hand, takes the basic principles of the iPad version and brings them to a smaller screen that should still enable you to mix your songs on the go. The turntable interface is still the same, as well as many of the commands and menus on screen. Only one turntable is displayed on the iPhone in portrait mode, to keep the experience as streamlined and elegant as possible. Two buttons at the bottom allow you to switch between songs, check how much time is left and regulate the volume output. Many of the other features of djay for iPad such as BPM auto-sync, equalizers and pre-cueing have been successfully ported to the iPhone, too.

djay: Full-Featured DJ System For iPad With A Gorgeous UI

When the iPad was announced back in January, many of us realized that the device would be perfect for professional DJ software. A large multi-touch surface, a brand new device developed by Apple backed up by the App Store – obviously the iPad was meant for DJ and music applications. Even more than the iPhone (which saw the rise of music making software anyway, in spite of the 3.5-inch screen) the iPad was too perfect for turntable interfaces to not take the risk and start developing one soon after the announcement.

What happened is history: just take a look at DJ Rana June’s Youtube channel and open the Music category in the App Store to get the idea of the success of professional music making / mixing software on the iPad. There are hundreds of apps out there that allow you to record and mix music, and there are dozens of quality DJ apps in the App Store.

The just-released djay by Algoriddim, however, takes the game a step further. It comes with an impressive feature set and underlying technology, it takes advantage of iOS 4.2 audio and streaming functionalities, it’s got stunning user interface and animations. What Reviewers Have Learned about Apple Vision Pro

By the time most Apple hardware is released, we usually know every minute detail of the specs and have a pretty good idea of what using it will be like. That hasn’t been the case with the Apple Vision Pro. Apple conducted multiple waves of demos in the months since WWDC 2023, but those were tightly controlled and limited. Today, however, we’re seeing the first hardware reviews from a range of media outlets and YouTubers who have had a chance to spend about a week testing the device.

There are some excellent reviews that are well worth reading in full, but I thought I’d highlight some of the most interesting tidbits that were either unknown or unclear before now to help give readers a better sense of what this hardware is all about.

Apple Releases visionOS SDK and Developer Tools

Today, Apple announced the visionOS software development kit that will allow developers to start creating apps for the Apple Vision Pro. In addition to the SDK, an update to Xcode is introducing Reality Composer Pro, which lets developers preview 3D models, animations, images, and sounds. There’s also a new visionOS simulator that can be used to test different room configurations and lighting for visionOS apps.

The developer labs that Apple announced at WWDC will open soon too:

Next month, Apple will open developer labs in Cupertino, London, Munich, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo to provide developers with hands-on experience to test their apps on Apple Vision Pro hardware and get support from Apple engineers.

Developers can also apply for an Apple Vision Pro developer kit, so they can test apps on the device itself. Anyone who has used Unity’s tools to build 3D apps and games will be able to port them to visionOS next month too.

The New iPad Air and 8th Generation iPad: The MacStories Overview

During an online-only event from Apple Park in Cupertino, Apple introduced a new iPad Air that looks as though it will rival the iPad Pro in many respects. The company also took the wraps off its 8th generation base-model iPad, which features a faster SoC.

The previous-generation iPad Air was unveiled in March 2019 as a mid-tier iPad between the base model and iPad Pro. That model was essentially a cheaper version of the discontinued 10.5” iPad Pro updated with new internals. The older model Air started at $499 and supported many of the same features as the iPad Pro with the notable exceptions of Apple’s ProMotion technology and the second-generation Apple Pencil.

2016 Apple Design Award Winners Announced

Each year at WWDC, Apple celebrates developers and the very best apps on its platforms with the Apple Design Awards. These award-winning apps are held up by Apple as raising the bar in design, technology, and innovation. Each app combines rich functionality and high performance, taking advantage of the latest features in Apple’s operating systems to provide unique experiences that enrich the App Store and customers’ lives. As Apple explains it in the WWDC app, the purpose of the Apple Design Awards is to ‘recognize state of the art iOS, OS X, watchOS, and tvOS apps that reflect excellence in design and innovation.’ For the second year in a row, the awards included a special category to recognize the accomplishments of student-developers.

The event, which in recent years has capped off the first day of WWDC, did so again, but this year the ADAs were held in the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium for the first time, as were the opening keynote and Platforms State of the Union. This year’s award ceremony also marks the first time that the ADAs include Apple TV apps.
