Apple Q1 2011 Financial Results - $26.74 Billion Revenue, 7.33 Million iPads Sold

Apple just posted their Q1 2011 financial results. The company posted a record revenue of $26.74 billion with 7.33 million iPads sold, 16.24 million iPhones and 4.13 million Macs. The company posted record net quarterly profit of $6 billion, or $6.43 per diluted share. 19.45 million iPods were sold during the quarter.

“We had a phenomenal holiday quarter with record Mac, iPhone and iPad sales,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We are firing on all cylinders and we’ve got some exciting things in the pipeline for this year including iPhone 4 on Verizon which customers can’t wait to get their hands on.”

“We couldn’t be happier with the performance of our business, generating $9.8 billion in cash flow from operations during the December quarter,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the second fiscal quarter of 2011, we expect revenue of about $22 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $4.90.”

In the last quarter, Apple posted record iPhone and Mac sales with 14.1 million iPhone sold, 3.89 million Macs and 4.19 million iPads. The company posted record revenue of $20.34 billion and net quarterly profit of $4.31 billion. In the year-ago quarter, Apple posted revenue of $15.68 billion and a net quarterly profit of $3.38 billion. 3.36 million Macs were sold in Q1 2010, together with 8.7 million iPhones and 21 million iPods.

Apple will provide live streaming of its Q1 2011 financial results conference call at 2:00 PM Pacific, and we’ll update this story with the conference highlights.

    Quotes From Q&A

Tim Cook: “Very happy with the Mac App Store so far”

TC: “We believe the results from the Verizon iPhone will be huge”

TC: “We are working around the clock to build more iPhones”

TC: Revenue from Greater China (Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan) last quarter was $2.6 billion, up 4 times last quarter

TC: 15 more countries to start selling iPhone in January

TC: “Commodities – going into March quarter. Key metals pricing increasing but other commodities such as batteries and RAM we expect to fall.”

TC: “Apple is doing its best work ever. We are all very happy with product pipeline and the team here has an unparalleled breadth and depth that Steve has driven in the company, and excellence has become a habit. We feel very very confident about the future of the company. I would also note that we’ve done outstanding job in our Mac: 19 straight quarters of outgrowing market, but still have a very low share. It would seem like still enormous opportunity there.” [via]

TC: Apple is not doing a 7-inch tablet, which would be a scaled-up smartphone. It’s a bizarre product.

TC: “Put Android & Windows tablets side by side with an iPad and an enormous percentage will choose iPad.”

TC: “Next generation Android tablets - there’s nothing shipping. They lack performance specs, they lack pricing, they lack timing - so today they’re vapor.”

TC: ” We’re very confident for entering a fight with anyone.”

Tim Cook on iPad sales Vs. Mac sales: “Yes, I think there is some cannibalization”

This Free App Lets You Control Music with Gestures

The app is called SongSwiper, it’s available for free in the App Store and it was updated yesterday to include Retina-ready graphics for the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4th gen. SongSwiper is basically a controller for music playing from the standard Apple iPod app, but it allows you to control songs with swipes and taps instead of buttons, as in the iPod application.

The app looks a lot like Bowtie or Coversutra for OS X in the way it displays the artwork for a song currently playing. Unlike the aforementioned Mac apps, though, SongSwiper can’t live on top of your desktop – you’ll have to open the app every time if you want to enjoy its feature set. You can change between songs with a single swipe left or right, or adjust volume with a swipe up / down. To play and pause, double tap on the artwork. You can shuffle, manually pick songs from your Library.

SongSwiper might be the perfect app for those who use the iPhone in their car a lot and find it easier to swipe on the screen rather than having to point to a specific little button. The app’s free, so you should give it a try.

TV Show Tracker 2.0 for iPhone: One To Add To Your Homescreen

Not having cable, keeping tabs on the shows that appear on cable TV bites because I have to constantly check in on online schedules (all on different networks) just to see when the next episode of House is going to air. What sucks is that when having only Hulu as my prime source of entertainment, December was a month devoid of any content as weekly shows began to grind to a halt. With the exception of Saturday Night Live and a maybe two other shows, I’m paying for nothing. Shows will come back, but when?

We’ve already covered TV Show Tracker on MacStories, but the 2.0 update is worth mentioning since it delivers a much improved interface, a notification system alerting you before or after a show ends, inline video previews of episodes, and quick iTunes links so you can rent those shows quickly from the interface. TV Show Tracker consolidates all of the shows you watch into an instant access panel where you simply search for the popular program you watch and add it to your list of shows. TV Show Tracker displays the artwork for the program’s season, displays previous and upcoming showtimes, and keeps tabs on what episodes you’ve already seen. This is an app to add to your homescreen if you’re at all interested on keeping track of your favorite shows – it’s super convenient to have only the show listings you care about all in one place.

More Alleged iPad 2 Cases Appear, Hint at Mini DisplayPort

Rumors and leaks surrounding the forthcoming second generation iPad continue to spread like wildfire across the blogosphere with the latest coming from AppleInsider and MIC Gadget. Both received photos of iPad 2 cases that had openings that would suggest the addition of a rear facing camera, larger speaker, possible SD card slot and most intriguingly a small port at the top of the device that could be for a Mini DisplayPort receptacle.

The two tech blogs received photo’s of cases from China that whilst different had virtually identical port openings and further back up reports by Engadget that the second generation iPad would have an SD card slot and rear facing camera. The larger opening on cases around the speaker is also a recurring feature of such leaked iPad 2 cases and seems to be a likely improvement on the iPad 2.

During Steve’s Absence, Apple Will Be Just Fine

News broke earlier today that Steve Jobs is taking another medical leave of absence to focus on his health. And just like the last time, he has appointed Apple COO Tim Cook as the head of day-to-day operations. This time around, though, Steve Jobs will maintain the CEO position. Long story short: Steve Jobs has to focus on his health and personal life, something you would expect from a man who beat cancer in the past and successfully underwent a liver transplant. Apple employees will have get used to not seeing Jobs on campus or in his office for a few months. But I don’t want to speculate on Jobs’ conditions, habits and role at Cupertino. Instead, I would like to point out how out of this complex and much-talked story Apple as a company will be doing just fine. Read more

Browser+ for iPad Aims To Reinvent Safari

I have been trying a lot of alternative browsers for the iPad over the past months. Since my good friend @kenyarmosh suggested me to give a spin to iCab Mobile (for iPhone and iPad), my interest for well-crafted, feature rich and innovative third-party browsers reached a new level. And while I’m still digging into all the features offered by iCab (which is, without a doubt, the most powerful alternative to Apple’s default browser), I have also been testing other simpler, minimal browsers that aim at offering a different take on browsing the Internet on the tablet.

Browser+ HD for iPad, in spite of its not-so-appealing name, is the freshest and simplest browser I have found in the App Store so far. What Browser+ does is simple: it takes standard elements of web browsing such as tabs, address bar and history and completely re-imagines them as if they were built from scratch for the iPad. Pretty much like Flipboard did for web content that has to be consumed on a tablet’s screen. Browser+, sold at $0.99 in the App Store, doesn’t come with all the functionalities found in Apple’s Safari or iCab Mobile, but what’s there has been recreated to fit better on the iPad. Read more

Wunderlist Review: Untethered Task Management Freedom

I attribute Dropbox to a few successful college projects because of how easy it is to collaborate by sharing files. Everyone understood the concept that they can drop a file into a shared folder, and everyone could see it. However, when we get to delegating tasks or making sure everyone is on the same page, e-mail and Facebook messages can only get so much done. Wunderlist is the solution to both free personal and collaborative task management, easily rivaling some of the more common GTD apps available for OS X and other platforms. Intuitive syncing, low barrier of entry, and seamless integration with most of your devices finally delivers a solution to customers who want more than a task list, and want it for free.

Steve Jobs To Take “Medical Leave of Absence”

According to a press release that just went out, Apple’s board has granted Steve Jobs a medical leave of absence. He will stay as CEO and Tim Cook will handle day to day operations. In the letter to the Apple team, Jobs says he wants to focus on his health and will still be “involved in major strategic decisions”. He is confident Tim Cook and the executive management team will manage to accomplish the goals set for 2011.

It is unclear at this point what the reason for this medical leave is; Jobs underwent a liver transplant in 2009 and, similarly to today’s news, Tim Cook took over day to day operations at Apple. In 2004, Jobs contracted Pancreatic Cancer, which he beat.

All we can say is – get well soon, Steve.

First iPad 2 LCD Screen Picture?

Over the weekend, several blogs reported of “2x” graphic files (which we spotted last August) found in the iBooks application binary that suggested an increased resolution in the next generation iPad. Apple, in fact, uses the “2x” suffix to separate graphic elements belonging to non-Retina devices from those designed for the iPhone 4 Retina Display. The rumored increased resolution for the iPad 2 would be 2048x1536 pixels, double the current one.

As noted by MacRumors, website GlobalDirectParts (the same company that posted leaked photos of the CDMA iPhone parts weeks ago) is now selling an “iPad 2 LCD Screen” for $218.19. The website also sells screens replacement for the first-generation iPad and a variety of other Apple products. The $218.19 price point seems to suggest higher production costs for the new screen, which may or may not imply a higher resolution built-in the unit.

The same website has also update its catalogue with an “iPad Vibrating Motor” (the current iPad doesn’t have vibration like the iPhone) and a white iPad 2 that, however, it’s just a mockup from a few months ago. According to recent speculation, the iPad 2 will come out in the first two weeks of April with an SD card slot and a higher resolution screen.
