BlackBerry vs. iPhone: What’s In Your Pocket?

BlackBerry vs. iPhone: What’s In Your Pocket?

Apple says the iPhone is more than a mere appliance for sending e-mail. The device, with its sleek touch screen and ability to run hundreds of thousands of Web-connected applications, games and utilities, can be used for nearly any purpose, business or personal, a line that Apple hopes to blur out of existence.

“Most people now want to use a single device to handle both their personal and professional lives,” said Shaw Wu, an analyst at Kaufman Bros. “That’s what Apple’s really good at — and now RIM is playing catch-up.”

I guess the question is: can they even catch up at this point? 275,000 apps is no small difference. [via]

Slow Down: An App That Will Make You Slow Down Your Car, With Music

This is an app I’m completely supporting, as it’s been developed and promoted by the Belgian organization OVK, Parents of Children Killed in Road Accidents. Slow Down, available for free in the App Store, will make you slow down your car by slowing down the music you’re listening to while driving.

Thanks to a combination of GPS to retrieve a road’s driving speed limit and access to the iPod library on your iPhone, Slow Down will remind you when you need to slow by slowing down a song or completely stop its playback. Simple and genius at the same time, as as I said – a concept I’m seriously rooting for.

Go download the app here. Then use it.[Engadget via OVK] Read more

Fring Update: Full-Screen Video Calling, “Dynamic Video Quality”

Fring, a popular VoIP service that allows you make regular phone calls, video calls and chat, released an update to their official iPhone client today which brings a number of new features and fixes.

First off, fring is introducing a new video calling technology called DVQ (Dynamic Video Quality) that automatically adjusts the quality of a video calling session according to your bandwidth in order to provide an always-good experience. I’m testing it on 3G and, admittedly, it works pretty well. There’s also a new video quality indicator that enables you to check on the quality of the connection in real-time. Neat. Read more

Turn Your iPhone’s Spotlight Into A Quick App Launcher | Cydia Store

ListLauncher is a new $0.99 tweak available in the Cydia Store which turns the standard iPhone Spotlight into an easy way to launch apps on your device. By default, when you move to the left side of your homescreen you’ll see a blank Spotlight page with just a search box. Once you install ListLauncher from Cydia, the Spotlight start page will become a list of all apps installed on your iPhone, but you’ll still be able to start typing to search for something.

ListLauncher simply takes over the standard Spotlight page to display a list with all your apps. Pretty useful for all those who have way too many stuff on their iPhones and would like to have a quick and easy way to retrieve apps at any time. I wish a next update will bring the possibility to jump to specific letters much like in the Contacts app.

New Report Claims Verizon Doesn’t Want The iPhone On Other U.S. Carriers

Well well, look who’s back: the Verizon iPhone. Actually, it’s just “more Verizon iPhone rumors”, but we’ll settle with that. For now. So anyway, in spite of the several rumors claiming that the mythical device is finally coming in the first quarter of 2011 (and indeed, won’t be a simple “Verizon iPhone” but  CDMA unit capable of running on multiple CDMA networks worldwide) we still haven’t seen anything real yet. Not a single leaked and blurry picture, not a single document – nothing. Just rumors.

The latest report from Kaufman Bros.’ analyst Shaw Wu claims Apple “got the terms it wanted from Verizon” and the device should be coming in early 2011. Nothing new to see here. Read more

Next Angry Birds Update Coming On Valentine’s Day?

First came the iPhone version. Then a bigger iPad one. With the two versions selling like hotcakes in the App Store, Rovio released a Halloween edition. Last week, they updated it to include some Christmas-themed levels and renamed the new version to “Seasons”.

Angry Birds is an unstoppable pop culture phenomenon, something Daring Fireball’s John Gruber calls “today’s Pac Man”. We all know Angry Birds is insanely popular, yet Rovio doesn’t seem to be willing to stop and enjoy the money anytime soon. According to a rumor published by Pocket Gamer, the developers are already eyeing a Valentine’s Day release in February 2011. Read more

Kid Who Sold White iPhone Kits Forced To Shut Down His Website

Remember Fei Lam, the kid who made a small fortune selling white iPhone conversion kits and received a letter from a private investigator on behalf of Apple to end operations? Look at the sidebar here on MacStories, there’s a promo banner for his old website “WhiteiPhone4Now.com”.

Two days ago I noticed the website was down, but I thought Lam was just changing DNS or something. After all, he seemed pretty sure of the fact that he wanted to keep on selling his kits no matter what. Well it turns out, Apple won. In an email to Cult of Mac Lam confirmed he had to shut the website down, “possibly permanently”.

No further details have been provided, but we can only assume the story got serious the moment Lam claimed he wouldn’t stop selling conversion kits and Apple legal was after him. Foxconn also confirmed they didn’t know anything about white iPhone parts being sold to Lam, so it’s very likely that he got them from grey market. Who knows.

We wish the best of luck to Lam for his future efforts, which we’re pretty sure won’t include selling alternative Apple components.
