Apple: iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus Arrive in 36 More Countries and Territories This Month

Apple today issued a press release, noting that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will launch in another 36 countries this month. That will make the iPhone available in 69 countries by the end of the month, with 115 countries expected to get the new iPhones by the end of the year. According to Apple this will be the fastest iPhone rollout ever.

The countries getting the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus this month are as follows:

  • Friday, October 17: China, India and Monaco
  • Thursday, October 23: Israel
  • Friday, October 24: Czech Republic, French West Indies, Greenland, Malta, Poland, Reunion Island and South Africa
  • Thursday, October 30: Bahrain and Kuwait
  • Friday, October 31: Albania, Bosnia, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Guam, Hungary, Iceland, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Macau, Macedonia, Mexico, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, South Korea, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine and Thailand

As you can see from the below chart, the claim that this is the “fastest iPhone rollout ever” depends on which point you judge it. As of today (day 34) it is not the fastest rollout, but by the end of this month (day 52) and end of this year, it is.

Diagonal lines indicate that exact launch rollouts are not known, but the general projection is known (ie. 115 countries by the end of the year)

Apple issued a press release today noting that the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will launch in China on Friday, October 17. Preorders will begin a week earlier on October 10 and they will be available on all three of China’s major mobile networks; China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom.

“We are thrilled to bring iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to our customers in China on all three carriers at launch,” said Apple’s CEO Tim Cook. “With support for TD-LTE and FDD-LTE, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus customers will have access to high-speed mobile networks from China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom for an incredible experience.”

Prices for the iPhone 6 will start at 5,288 (RMB) for the 16GB model, 6,088 (RMB) for the 64GB model and 6,888 (RMB) for the 128GB model. The iPhone 6 Plus will start at 6,088 (RMB) for the 16GB model, 6,888 (RMB) for the 64GB model and 7,788 (RMB) for the 128GB model.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus first went on sale on September 19 in the US and nine other countries where 10 million units were sold in the opening weekend. The second launch round took place last Friday when it went on sale in 20 countries.

Inside Apple’s iPhone 6 Testing Lab

Josh Lowensohn:

A few blocks away from Apple’s bustling campus in Cupertino is a rather nondescript building. Inside is absolutely the last place on earth you’d want to be if you were an iPhone. It’s here where Apple subjects its newest models to the kinds of things they might run into in the real world: drops, pressure, twisting, tapping. Basically all the things that could turn your shiny gadget into a small pile of metal and glass.

I’m starting to think that the iPhonegates Apple goes through every year may be worth it if only for the peek behind the curtain we get.

This time, in response to the so-called #bendgate, Apple invited the press to visit their secret testing lab for the iPhone 6. The Verge has fascinating photos and details; CNBC has a video report.

iPhone 6 Camera Compared to Previous iPhone Cameras

Lisa Bettany:

In the past seven years, each new advancement in iPhone camera technology has made dramatic improvements to image quality. The iPhone 6 is no different. Besides being faster to shoot and easier to focus, the images taken with the iPhone 6 camera show greater detail and are significantly better in low-light.

In this follow-up post to my iPhone 4s and iPhone 5 comparisons, I present an 8 iPhone comparison from all iPhone versions taken with Camera+ including, the original iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, and the new iPhone 6 in a variety of situations to test the camera’s capabilities.

Great compilation. Check out the lowlight and backlit galleries to really get the differences.

Apple Airs New iPhone 6 Commercials – “Huge” and “Cameras”

Apple aired two new iPhone commercials last night, showcasing the new size of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus as well the improved cameras on both devices.

Narrated by Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake, the ads are called “Huge” and “Cameras”. In the first ad, Fallon tries to explain the additions to the new iPhones with Timberlake simply remarking that they’re “huge”. In the second ad, they go into more detail about new features such as time-lapse mode, Slo-Mo at 240 fps, and image stabilization, showing various parts of iOS 8’s UI from the Camera and Photos apps.

Apple announced yesterday that 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units were sold over the opening weekend, a new record for the company. You can watch both ads below.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus for One-Handed Use

Georgia and Rene have made the best video about one-handed use for the new iPhones I’ve seen to date. Short, practical examples (replace the Starbucks cup with an espresso in my case), and I’ve finally seen what Reachability looks like in motion.

For someone with relatively big hands, this gives me hope:

The iPhone 6 holds up relatively well. Even with my tiny hands I can still walk, type, and drink effectively. I do have to alter my grip slightly, in the same way I had to alter it when I went from the iPhone 4s to iPhone 5, but it remains extremely doable. Part of that is the thinner, rounder body, which is larger than the iPhone 5 but lighter even than the iPhone 4s. So, it might take some getting used to, and you might have to give your brain a few days to wire in new habits, but you you be just fine.

Serenity Caldwell’s iPhone 6 Camera Test

Serenity Caldwell has a great overview of the capabilities of the new iPhone 6 camera.

I’m mostly going to let the demo video I took (starring Hayley Contagious of the Boston Derby Dames) speak for itself. We shot, cut, and posted this in under two hours, using only an iPhone 6—no tripod, no Steadicam, no accessories. In fact, every shot you see in that video was with me running around in boots following Hayley’s motion—I wasn’t even on skates to try and stabilize the camera.

I’m particularly glad that Serenity published several photos and videos shot on the iPhone 6 (not the Plus) in real-life scenarios (dance floor photos? Very welcome example). These give me confidence that I’m making the right decision this weekend.

As Opening Weekend iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Sales Top 10 Million, We Look Back at Previous iPhone Launches

This morning, Apple issued a press release announcing that the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have sold more than 10 million units in their first three days of sales after launching last Friday in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK.

“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.”

10 million units sold over the opening weekend is a new record for iPhone sales. Last year with the iPhone 5s and 5c Apple sold 9 million units and in 2012 Apple sold 5 million units of the iPhone 5. In fact, Apple has consistently beaten their opening weekend iPhone sales every single year.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will also launch in another 20 countries this Friday, September 26. Those countries include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey and United Arab Emirates.

On Location in Iceland with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

This is an incredible collection of photos by Austin Mann for The Verge. Make sure to check out the Focus Pixels and Slo-Mo videos – the difference is stunning.

I loved this bit about the iPhone as a camera:

I really enjoy the challenge and spontaneity of capturing powerful images without directing them. I love to explore, see a moment coming, line up the shot and capture it as it passes. The great thing about carrying the iPhone as my primary shooting device is it’s simple yet so powerful: it’s ready to capture virtually any scenario I encounter. It enables images like this in a way no other camera ever could, no matter the cost.

For a comparison, check out Mann’s trip to Patagonia with an iPhone 5s from last year.
