InCode, Plain Text Editor for iPad

We at MacStories are always looking forward to new and good apps, but when it comes to apps such as text editors and Twitter clients we’re definitely looking forward and living on the edge. We do this because we firmly believe that one can always do better than someone else, and sometimes it’s just about discovering that good app that’s out in the App Store but no one has ever written about. Sometimes it’s just about trusting that small team of developers that have a great idea. Most of the times though, I guess it’s just about trying new software and be open to new stuff.

That’s why we are always looking forward to the next good app. Without forgetting about the current ones, of course. Once you’re in the loop, it just happens.

The app I’m going to talk about today is a text editor, a quite simple one, that I’ve discovered while browsing the App Store the day it opened. InCode by Novastorm Software looked promising back then, what about now?

InCode is specifically meant to be a simple application. A basic text editor with a clean interface that doesn’t distract you when you’re writing, something that many apps unfortunately do. InCode is simple, but there are a few features worth mentioning though.

First of all, tabbed editing: I don’t know why a very few apps do this, but I love tabbed editing as it lets me switch back and forth between documents without having to navigate through the whole interface, even if it requires seconds. With InCode you can just create multiple files inside multiple folders and open them at any time, yet retaining the ability to quickly switch between them. I wish more developers implemented this.

Another cool feature of this app is that folders can be transferred from the app to your Mac and vice versa using iTunes, but the process is a little bit tricky now. The developer confirmed that he’s found a way to make everything smoother and easy, and that an update with this fix has already been submitted to Apple for approval.

Where InCode really should get better is the user interface design: ok for being a simple app, but I’d have liked some icons for folders and files, at least. Also, it would be great to have a font picker for the text editing window and a more polished navigation in the sidebar.

InCode has interesting ideas but should look better. I’m sure that the developer will work on this, so pretty I’m confident that I’ll give it another try in the future. Until that time, you can find the app at $2.99 here.
