Just like we expected in October, VLC for iOS has been removed from the App Store. But this time, the removal of one of the most popular free apps for iPhone and iPad has nothing to do with Apple and the app review team’s rules. Instead, we have to thank developer Rémi Denis-Courmont, who since October has been busy trying to get the app out of the App Store because it violated VLC’s GNU public license. Rather than keep calm, carry on and let other developers (Applidium, the guys behind the VLC port to iOS) distribute VLC for iOS for free, he forced to get the app removed. Read more

Mac App Store’s First 24 Hours: Developers Post Sales Numbers
The Mac App Store was released as part of the Mac OS X 10.6.6 update earlier than expected. The new Store to discover and download Mac software opened its doors a few hours earlier than many initially thought, which means it’s been out for more than 24 hours now. Still, several developers were waiting anxiously this morning to check the sales numbers of their apps in the first day of the Mac App Store, as provided by Apple’s iTunes Connect service. And while many are still experiencing issues when trying to generate reports from IC’s “Sales & Trends” section, the first numbers are in. And they’re pretty interesting. Read more

If the blazing speed of Apple’s built in SSD for the MacBook Air isn’t fast enough, head over to OWC and check out their Aura Pro Express. Featuring write speeds up to 275 MB/s over Apple’s factory 215MB/s, you’re looking at a 15% increase in face melting performance. At the top of the line, you can nab yourself a 360 GB Express SSD if you still can’t live out of the cloud, though that’ll set you back an easy $1,180. You can nab a 180 GB model at a cooler $500, and you’ll still get OWC’s chip based encryption, RAID-like data protection, and ultra-efficient wear leveling that any good SSD drive should have. I don’t know if I’ll pick one of these bad boys up any time soon, but we’re sure there will be plenty who are willing to grab their torx screwdrivers and empty their pockets for one of these.
Verizon iPhone To Launch February 3rd?
The Boy Genius Report suspects that an impending vacation freeze at Apple from February 3rd to the 6th indicates an important first four day weekend to focus on sales of a new handset. Coinciding with last year’s similar June 24th through June 27th, also a Thursday through Friday, and Verizon’s typical Thursday launch days, the rumored release of a Verizon iPhone during this period is plausible.
In addition, Verizon Wireless typically launches new devices on Thursdays. WhileBGR has not yet confirmed that the Verizon iPhone is the device we’ll see debut on the 3rd, the timing lines up very well with previous reports; no other Apple products have been rumored to be launching in this time frame.
I’m of two thoughts when it comes to a Verizon iPhone selling before the AT&T phone, but this is my main issue: Would Apple launch an iPhone 4 now only to release a new one on AT&T in a few months?

Update: Verizon just sent out invitations for a special event they will hold on January 11. Maybe the Verizon iPhone is really happening this time.
Mac App Store: 1 Million Apps Downloaded on Day One
This morning Apple announced that more than 1 million apps were downloaded from the Mac App Store on Day One. The Mac App Store was launched yesterday with around 1,000 apps available for OS X computers. According to Steve Jobs, “Developers have done a great job bringing apps to the store and users are loving how easy and fun the Mac App Store is”. The Mac App Store indeed offers an easy and fun purchase experience, although it’s pretty clear that some apps don’t exactly follow Apple’s own interface guidelines or aren’t exactly “best of the breed” of Mac software.
The Mac App Store undoubtedly changes the landscape of independent development for the Mac and software installation on OS X. One million downloads in 24 hours isn’t too bad, and we’ll see how these stats will pan out in the next weeks.
Mac App Store Now Open On The Web
Remember how Mac App Store links wouldn’t redirect to the web, instead opening the app? Now they do. It’s official folks: You can share links with your friends without having them worry about whether they have a Mac or a PC. Just in case the web preview annoys you by opening the actual app, you download the NoMoreiTunes Safari extension. On Google Chrome, just deny the pop-up message.

iPhone 3GS To Drop Price, $49 Tomorrow At AT&T
Will the iPhone drop price to compete with Android? Well maybe not for those reasons, but the last generation iPhone 3GS will be on the shelves for $49 tomorrow on contract. The last generation iPhone is still an excellent choice if you’re looking to save a buck: you still get all the fancy features of the latest iOS sans only the best smartphone camera around. The new price applies to both new customers and those looking to upgrade from their previous phone – I find this to be especially appealing to teenagers and college students wanting to get a head start on a good smartphone at an affordable price.

Apple Releases Remote Desktop In The Mac App Store and 3.4 Update
Earlier today, Apple released its VNC app / remote administration and assistance software Apple Remote Desktop in the Mac App Store. The app is available here at $79.99 (Mac App Store link) and, together with Aperture, it’s one of the “pro apps” that Apple decided to feature for the Mac App Store grand opening.The app, specifically tailored for network admins and users who need to manage a series of OS X machines in a local network, offers a huge feature set with functionalities such as software distribution, task server for package installations, UNIX shell scripts execution on clients and remote Automator tasks.
Today Apple also released an update to Remote Desktop, which reaches version 3.4 and it’s the same version that’s being sold in the Mac App Store. There’s no real changelog for this update just yet, except that Apple marks it as “recommended” for all Apple Remote Desktop users and addresses compatibility issues.
