Apple Releases Security Update 2010-006 for Snow Leopard

Time for another security update, folks. Apple has just released the Security Update 2010-006 for Snow Leopard (server and client versions) which is available here or, as usual, in Software Update.

The update addresses an issue where AFP shared folders could be accessed by a remote attacker using an invalid password. Go update. Or, check out the full update description below. Read more

Mailplane 2.2 released

Mailplane, the app that brings Gmail to your Mac’s desktop, has been recently updated with new features and bug fixes. New features: Support for Gmail’s new Priority Inbox; @usemailroom’s TrueView, which enables two counters, one for unread and one for unseen messages; you can now drag a Mailplane URL from the title bar to any application; Rapportive - which replaces the sponsored links on the right-hand side with useful contact information (this is an excellent feature, there’s even free add-ons for Firefox, Safari, and Chrome); Mailplane can now automatically open ‘safe’ attachments after downloading like Safari, just check the preference button; and auto-insert-BCC feature lets you integrate with a CRM, HelpDesk or similar service. Exclusive Preview: Reeder for Mac

Reeder is my favorite RSS reader for iPhone and iPad. I might even say that Reeder is one of my favorite iPad apps, together with Twitter, Flipboard and Simplenote. When developer Silvio Rizzi told me I could get into the Reeder for Mac testing team I immediately jumped in.

Reeder for Mac will be awesome. I have no doubts about that, but we can’t share all the details now. The app is still in its early development stages, many things will probably change by the release date and most of all: don’t ask for a release date now. I don’t know when Reeder for Mac is going to be available. Nor do we have “invites” for the beta or are in the position to hook you up with a beta copy.

We had permissions to post a couple of screenshots form the latest build of Reeder for Mac. It’s going to be the ultimate RSS app on OS X. Read more

Tweetie 2 for Mac Is Alive, And It Will Be Free

No one really knows what’s going on with Tweetie 2 for Mac: a first beta should have been out a month after the latest MacHeist, and those who bought the bundle should have been able to get early access to the beta. Then Twitter, Inc. purchased Loren Brichter’s atebits development studio and the Tweetie brand, but decided that only the iPhone version of Tweetie should be Twitter’s official client. While Tweetie for Mac was part of the deal, it wouldn’t be renamed.

So what happened to Tweetie 2 for Mac, exactly? We’ve taken a few steps back to re-analyze the situation, as no one is really following all the updates anymore. You can rest assured that Tweetie 2 for Mac is definitely happening, and it’s going to be free. Read more

Cyberduck 3.6 Released with Google Storage Support

Cyberduck is a great FTP client I use every day to upload files to Rackspace Cloud Files (actually, it’s one of the few OS X apps that support Cloud Files) and access my iPhone and iPad file system (jailbreak is required). It’s a full-featured application to upload files to the internet, which just got a lot of better and is about to be used by a lot more users.

There’s a Windows version in the works, that’s true, and a beta is launching later this month. You can read the details here and also take a look at the first screenshots; for what it’s worth, the Windows UI looks pretty clean. Down to our Mac business, the new version introduces support for Google Storage (go sign up here), a refined dashboard interface with awesome new icons, support for S3 Bucket versioning and new Google Docs features.

Check out the full press after the break. Read more

10 Beautiful iTunes 10 Replacement Icons

Here’s a follow-up to our post on how to get iTunes 9 look back in the latest 10 version: let’s talk about the icon. I personally don’t hate it (actually I quite like it), but it seems that I may be one of the very few ones. If you go over websites such as Dribbble or MacThemes or DeviantArt, people are going crazy about replacement icons for iTunes 10.

So I’ve rounded up 10 of the best replacements I’ve stumbled upon. I saved them in my Candybar database, and they’ll be here once (and if) I’ll decide to change my iTunes icon. Check them out after the break.

Want iTunes 9 Look Back? There’s A Mod For That.

I haven’t covered OS X graphical mods here on MacStories for a long time, but this one’s good. It didn’t take long: if you hate iTunes 10’s new UI or you simply want the old colorful iTunes back, give a try to Damien Erambert’s iTunes 109.

The download comes with an easy to setup installer package which lets you choose if you want to change the entire application UI or just the sidebar icons. You can also get rid of those odd vertical buttons and change the application icon. I applied the mod on my new iMac, and it worked perfectly. Take a look at the screenshots below, and go download the mod here.
