Richard Branson’s “Project” Magazine for iPad Coming Tomorrow, Here’s A Sneak Peek

We talked about Richard Branson’s upcoming “Project” magazine for iPad last week, and it looks like everything is ready to go for tomorrow’s launch. Project Mag’s blog is up and running and, as noticed by The Next Web, a sneak peek of the “front cover video” featuring actor Jeff Bridges has surfaced online.

The video shows an animated front cover, but it’s not clear whether the app will feature interactive, animated pages or not. We just know that the first issue of this magazine specifically built for the iPad will feature the Tron: Legacy movie, and that’s about it.

There’s a banner with a direct link to the app up on Project Mag’s blog, but iTunes returns an error when clicking on it as the app isn’t out yet. It should be tomorrow. We’ll keep you posted about it. Read more

Report: Apple Stores Sold 8.8 iPads Per Hour on Black Friday

Everyone goes shopping on Black Friday (well, unless you prefer to check out online deals), and Apple Stores are no exception to this trend. With some pretty decent discounts set up for the day after Thanksgiving, we knew Apple was going to sell a whole bunch of iPads and new MacBook Airs on that day – but we may have the actual numbers here.

Fortune is reporting that, according to a report from Gene Munster’s team at Piper Jaffray, Apple sold approximately 8.8 iPad units per hour on Black Friday and 8.2 Mac units per hour. A rough estimate of 8.8 iPads sold per hour across 236 US stores in a 12 hours timeframe leads us to 25.000 iPads sold on Black Friday.

Most notable in our observations,” he writes, “we noticed that the iPad is gaining traction (driven by lower price vs. the Mac) among demographics in which the Mac has historically not been successful. The bottom line is that Apple’s addressable market is expanding with the iPad.

Munster also states the iPad is “becoming the Mac of the masses”. An interesting statement looking forward.

Reinventing The Newspaper On The iPad with News+

Bonnier are the developers behind the Popular Science magazine for iPad, and with their latest News+ project they’re trying to reinvent the newspaper, which first appeared 150 years ago. They believe the iPad is the right and most obvious device to do so now, and they’re willing to try by basing the entire concept on fresh navigation methods (gestures), a richer layout (clearly inspired by magazines) and inline media.

News+ combines the depth and editorial choices of a daily newspaper with the web’s possibilities for interaction and quick updates.

Browsing News+ and absorbing the content comes naturally, making readers feel close to the articles and photos. You can follow the most important news as it develops in a special section that is continuously updated, so News+ keeps you on top of the news all day.

You may have heard a few UK carriers have been thinking about the possibility to offer subsidized iPads in the WiFi + 3G flavor to combine them with a monthly data plan. A few minutes ago Orange UK announced its plans, with pre-orders starting later today.

As for the iPads, the prices are:

  • iPad 16GB £199.00

Which, approximately, are $310 for the 16GB model, $390 for the 32GB one, $620 for the 64GB model. You’ll have to subscribe to a 2-year contract, though, that, at £27 ($42) per month, gives you 1GB anytime data usage, 1GB quiet time data (midnight to 4PM according to Orange) and 3GB BT Openzone WiFi.

The plans are available here. Expect T-Mobile and Three to follow in the next weeks with their iPad offers.

Overboard Now iOS 4.2.1 Compatible, Looks Great On iPad | Cydia Store

Overboard, the useful tweak by Ryan Petrich which allows you to easily switch between your Springboard pages with a nice overlay interface, has been updated to work with all devices running iOS 4.2.1. This means the tweak not only works great on the iPhone and iPod Touch, it also runs smoothly on iPads jailbroken using redsn0w.

You can assign a custom activation method to Overboard (with Activator) or simply call it using the icon on the Springboard. I’m using a pinch gesture and it works really well. In the tweak’s settings you can adjust the way it displays pages and icons, choosing from different column layouts, backgrounds and visible dock. If you’re really that convinced Overboard will become your most used app, you cam make it your homescreen.

Overboard is available at $1.99 in the Cydia Store.

WiFi Connection Issues Still Affecting iOS 4.2.1 for iPad?

On November 12th we reported Apple was planning to “delay” the release of iOS 4.2 due to the WiFi connection issues reported by several users running the GM build seeded to developers on November 1st. Indeed, the plan was to release iOS 4.2 on November 12th but Apple decided to release a second GM build for iPad to address the WiFi issues instead.

Eventually Apple released another GM build of iOS 4.2 to address other minor issues, which is the iOS 4.2.1 version that’s currently shipping to users – even if Apple simply calls it “iOS 4.2”. We did a little research on Apple’s discussion boards and MacRumors forums though, and we found out that, actually, WiFi issues are still being widely reported by users who have recently upgraded to iOS 4.2.1. iPad Snow Globe Makes An Appearance At Apple Stores

Apple is getting ready for the holiday season and, Black Friday sale aside, they have started decorating Apple Stores with  giant iPad snow globes. Oh, and some Beatles stuff, too.

As spotted by TiPB, the giant iPad is set to play a video containing iBooks and the Gourmet Live app for the holidays – which undoubtedly is a good move to tout the tablet as the go-to device for people looking to enrich their cooking skills with some geek love this year. As for the Beatles, we’re not really surprised. They’re part of a huge marketing campaign from Apple aimed at promoting both iTunes and the band, so putting some promo material in Apple stores was the most logical step.

Check out the iPad snow globe video below. Read more

iPad 2: Retina Display, Lighter, Camera, Gyroscope and…USB Port?

According to a report from Chinese-language Economy Daily News also published by Digitimes, industry sources are claiming these will be the five key features Apple will add to the next generation iPad:

  • Video phone
  • Better mobility
  • USB port
  • New display technology
  • 3-axis gyroscope

Which, put simply, means: FaceTime camera, thinner and lighter device, a USB port, a Retina Display and same iPhone 4 gyroscope. Many reports have surfaced from “industry sources” close to Digitimes in the past, and with rumors of Apple ramping up production of the next generation iPad for a Q1 2011 launch it is possible that these rumors have a solid foudation.
