iPad 2 Coming in February 2011?

According to a new report from Digitimes, the iPad 2 may ship as early as February 2011 – in less than 100 days now. Foxconn’s plants in Shenzen have been recently notified that initial shipments, due in February, will reach 400,000 - 600,000 units:

The sources pointed out that the iPad 2 will ship as soon as the end of February in 2011. Apple originally planned to start mass production in January, but because the device’s firmware is currently still in testing, Apple has been postponing the schedule. Since Foxconn’s new plants in Chengdu are still in pilot production, iPad 2 will be mainly supplied by its Shenzhen plants, while the company’s upstream component partners have all been notified of the shipments schedule.

Rumors surfaced in November suggested that Apple would include a FaceTime camera in the next iPad, USB ports, Retina Display and a gyroscope. It is also believed that Largan Precision has been selected to be the camera lens maker of the next generation iPad.

Foxconn, of course, declined to comment on the new rumors.

You Can Design Project Magazine’s Cover

Richard Branson’s Project magazine for iPad came out last week and it quickly climbed the charts of free and top grossing apps in Apple’s App Store. Fair enough, even if the app doesn’t revolutionize digital magazines on tablet it still features neat graphics and animations to appeal the average App Store user.

Branson may not know why the team decided to build it for the iPad and not the web – we think designers and magazine publishers will need to come up with something better than an animated cover to reinvent the publishing industry on Apple’s device.

If you feel like you can do something better, though, here’s your chance to design Project Mag’s next cover. As reported by Mashable, there’s a contest going on that allows designers from around the globe to submit their ideas for a new cover of Project Mag. Virgin apparently held a scavenger hunt both in NYC and San Francisco, hiding four paper mannequins containing the coordinates to USB keys with the details of the contest. Sounds pretty complex.

If you missed the hunt, Mashable uploaded the .zip file with all the details to Dropbox. Entries due by Dec. 15th, no money – just the glory and the chance to meet Branson someday. Or maybe a free ride on the Virgin Galactic. We’d choose the space thing.

Osfoora HD for iPad Is Now iOS 4.2 Compatible

A few days after a sneak peek at the Mac version, popular Twitter client Osfoora for iPad has been updated to include support for iOS 4.2. The update took longer than expected, as Osfoora users have been asking for multitasking support for several weeks now. The app now runs smoothly on iOS 4.2 and can correctly save your position when switching to other apps.

The 1.2 version also brings improved scrolling in the timeline, a variety of bug fixes and updated image sharing services. For those who missed our review of Osfoora HD for iPad:

Osfoora for iPad comes with a couple of original and interesting ideas, combines them with tons of features geared towards the average Twitter power user and offers a good-looking, polished package which gets a very few things wrong, but surely deservers your attention.

iPad Gift Cards Spotted at Apple Stores

As noted by iLounge, Apple has started selling “iPad Gift Cards” in its retail stores right ahead of Christmas. The cards aren’t anything special – actually, they’re just standard Apple gift cards wrapped inside a nice iPad-specific package.

What’s interesting is that, apparently, Apple updated its iPad purchase policies to include support for discounts through the aforementioned gift cards. Until a few weeks ago, Apple only allowed customers to buy an iPad via a debit or credit card.

Now you don’t have excuses anymore: your wife wants an iPad. You know what to do.

$100,000 School Program Gets Every 4th-Grader An iPad

A $100,000 pilot program at two elementary schools in Hancock County will allow hundreds of fourth graders to get iPads and start reading books, doing math and other different assignments on them. The program, which will take place at Weirton Heights and Allen T. Allison elementary schools, was paid for with the help of federal grant money, but teachers are already looking for ways to completely customize the iPad experience for each child. Read more

Infinifolders Updated, Now Supports iOS 4.2.1 On iPad | Cydia Store

Infinifolders by chpwn is one of our favorite Cydia tweaks here at MacStories: not only it allows you to put as many apps as you wish inside iOS folders (current limitation is 12 on the iPhone, 20 on the iPad), it also lets you customize the way folders become “scrollable” and activate a neat vertical paging functionality.

The latest update, version 1.3.3-1, adds full iOS 4.2.1 support for the iPad, which can now enjoy the power of unlimited folders as well. I’ve been testing the update on my jailbroken iPad and it works perfectly.

If you’re considering a jailbreak for your iPad running iOS 4.2 but looking “limited” in certain features, Infinifolders is one of those tweaks that leverage the real potentialities of the Cydia community. Recommended.

Camera Connection Kit on iOS 4.2 No Longer Powers Some USB Devices - Bug or Feature?

When Apple unveiled the iPad, they also announced they would release a dongle called Camera Connection Kit to allow users to connect digital cameras and SD cards to their iPads. When the Camera Connection Kit became available, users found out that it was possible to plug a series of USB devices, keyboards (even Apple’s ones) and microphones in the iPad. The device running the old iOS 3.2 recognized the peripherals just fine.

As reported by Mark Gurman at 9to5mac last night, though, it seems like there is a bug on the recently released iOS 4.2 that prevents devices requiring more than 20mA of power to be connected to the iPad:

The essence of the issue with the connection kit and iOS 4.2 is that connected devices that require power of more than 20mA will no longer work. That means that many USB keyboards (Apple’s included) will no longer work with the iPad, as well as USB flash drives. When the user connects a device that is not self-powered and requires more than 20mA of power from the iPad they get the following alert: “The connected USB device requires too much power.

EA Gives My Friends One More Reason To Steal My iPad: Monopoly Classic

My closest friends are addicted to two things in this world: Monopoly and my iPad. Either they play the board game, or they grab my beloved tablet to play Fruit Ninja HD. I can tell you this happens every week, on a regular basis, and the only advantage of the iPad is that the battery eventually dies. Otherwise, they would play all night trying to break my girlfriend’s 912 points record at Fruit Ninja’s arcade mode. They’re currently stuck somewhere around 810.

The problem is, anyway, those two addictions will soon merge into one because of Electronic Arts, which is bringing Monopoly to the iPad. The actual Monopoly, the real one – in fact, the game will be released as “Monopoly Classic for iPad” later this month. Just before Christmas. Oh boy. Read more
