Hacker Enables FaceTime on iPhone 3GS [Video]

iPhone development group iPhoneislam (the same guys behind FaceTime Hacktivator) managed to get FaceTime up and running on an iPhone 3GS – without video transmission. As you can see in the video below, the developer installs a tweak called FaceIt-3GS on the device, which can receive calls. They haven’t figured out a way to use the 3GS camera yet, but I guess the hack will be complete and available in Cydia soon.

Without a front-facing camera, FaceTime doesn’t make much sense. Still, it’ll be useful for those die-hard 3GS users that want FaceTime, with a trade-off.

T-Mobile Makes Fun of Apple’s FaceTime With “Get a Mac”-like Ad

With its latest ad to promote the MyTouch 4G, T-Mobile makes fun of Apple’s FaceTime restrictions (it only works on wifi, remember?) and blames AT&T for slowing down the entire iPhone 3G experience.

In the ad, very similar to the old “Get a Mac” ones, a young lady says “Hi. I’m a T-Mobile MyTouch 4G.”, then the camera reveals a man who says “And I’m an iPhone 4.” Another man is hanging on his back –he’s the old AT&T network. The ad goes on to say that Apple’s FaceTime works “everywhere there’s wifi, like in airports”, while you can make video calls anywhere with T-Mobile’s strong 4G network.

It’s a clever ad, and I like it. [via TUAW]

FaceTime In The Middle Now Possible With A Jailbreak Hack

Whether it’s been blocked by carriers or Apple, FaceTime in the Middle East has been a highly discussed subject on tech blogs in the past weeks. First silently pulled from Apple’s website, then confirmed, then tested on Macs and iPods, the lack of FaceTime in those countries has pissed off quite a few users.

Now the story seems to be finally over with a hack available in Cydia that solves a problem caused by…we don’t know who caused it. The hack is called “FaceTime Hacktivator”, is developed by the iPhoneIslam team and it’s available for free in Cydia. Read more

How To Setup A Home Surveillance System Using FaceTime

How To Setup A Home Surveillance System Using FaceTime

Run this script on your Mac when you leave the house, you can call your Apple ID from your iPhone 4 phone number. The script will auto answer the FaceTime call, allowing you to check in on things. When you hang up, FaceTime will quit, and the script will continue to listen for incoming calls. When you get home, stop the script and FaceTime will no longer auto-answer your calls.

Clever.

Middle East Countries Not Officially Supported In FaceTime for Mac

I don’t know what to think anymore, but to me it seems like this is just a big and confused mess over some carrier restrictions. Oh, and lots of PR gone wrong. Anyway, FaceTime in the Middle East countries: does it work? Yes and no. Yes, you can find a way to make it work, like buying a European iPhone unit. No, Apple doesn’t support it and it’s doing everything they can to remove FaceTime mentions and features from certain countries. Why? “Carrier issues”, or so they say.

How about FaceTime for Mac? You guess: Apple didn’t include Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Egypt in the preferences, SaudiMac reports. What’s interesting is that Jordan and Qatar made the list, even though they don’t support FaceTime on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Heh. Still, if you change your country to United States you’ll be able to use FaceTime for mac even from one of the countries not officially supported.

What a mess.

Tip: How To Sort Contacts by First / Last Name in FaceTime for Mac Beta

A surprising high numbers of readers asked me last night if it’s possible to change the way FaceTime for Mac (the current beta version) sorts contacts by first or last name. Basing on readers’ emails, it seemed like sorting was random: some of them were reporting contacts sorted by last name, some by first name, Apple’s website shows contacts sorted, indeed, by last name.

It’s really very simple. Like I wrote last night, FaceTime for Mac depends on your existing Address Book and doesn’t let you create additional buddy lists, or FaceTime-specific ones. Hopefully Apple will bring this feature in a future version. So to change how contacts are sorted in FaceTime.app, you actually have to change how your contacts are sorted in the Address Book. Is that simple.

Fire up the Address Book app, open the preferences, see the screenshot below.

FaceTime Does Work In The Middle East, With The iPod Touch

The “FaceTime in the Middle East” saga is undergoing another major development today: according to website iRamadah (Google Translation, via 9to5) Apple’s video calling system is working perfectly fine, only with an iPod Touch 4th generation. We have previously reported about the weird removal of all FaceTime images and mentions from Apple’s eastern websites, then Apple itself posted a supported document regarding the absence of FaceTime in certain Middle East countries due to problems with the carriers.
