Hidden, A Simplenote Client That Keeps Your Notes Private

Simplenote is a neat web service that comes with native iPhone and iPad apps (and a couple of widgets for the Mac, too) which enables you to store your notes in the cloud. I’m a huge fan of Simplenote, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most popular apps available in the App Store.

Hidden is a new iPhone app by Coding Robots (I’m hearing the developers are also working on a Simplenote-based task management app) that can access your standard Simplenote notes, but also allows you to keep private notes no one but you can read.

The app is really simple and straightforward, it’s got less features than the official Simplenote iOS client as it only allows you to write, delete and search notes. No tags, sharing or sorting options. But you can create private notes, which will be “hidden” inside the app but visible in the Simplenote web or iPhone interface. Hidden can hide notes that start with an underbar (_). Create a new note, type an underbar as the first character and start writing. The note will be backed up to Simplenote but it’ll be invisible in Hidden.

Accessing private notes is based on a clever implementation: you have to swipe on the navigation bar at the top. People wouldn’t expect the app to support gestures in the nav bar, but if you think some of your friends may still grab your phone, fire up the app and swipe like there’s no tomorrow, you can assign a passcode, too. Clever indeed, but like I said these notes won’t be hidden in other Simplenote clients.

At $1.99 in the App Store, Hidden is a pretty good deal if you’ve been looking for this very specific functionality. If you feel like waiting a little bit more, though, we have 10 promo codes to giveaway.
