App Store Not Profitable for Apple, Only 19% of Software is Paid
Apple’s App Store may be a runaway success thanks to the quality of applications and incredible offerings we often take for granted, but Apple isn’t exactly profiting off the massive sales. Wall Street analyst Gene Munster says that of all the downloaded App Store applications, 81% are free. Of those paid for, the average selling price is $1.49.
Now keep in mind that apple takes a 30% cut of every paid purchase. However, Apple turns around and pays the credit card company a mandatory $.20 + 2% of the sale, then includes a %1 processing fee on top of that. Since the launch of the App Store, Apple has been speculated to earn 428 million dollars, with 189 million dollars left in gross profit (which is just 1% of Apple’s 33.7 billion in gross profit). Apple themselves have spent 81 million in maintaing the solidity of the App Store. If we figure in the fact that iOS devices attribute to 16.6 million sales per day, compared to 8.9 million downloads per day on the iTunes store, the numbers are rather astounding considering how little profit Apple is making in the grand scale of things.
Yes, Adobe Audition Is Coming to Mac OS X
Two weeks ago we reported that Adobe might be working on a Mac version of its popular audio editing tool Audition, as seen in a leaked Youtube video. Last night Adobe confirmed that a Mac version is indeed in the works, and that a beta version will launch later this year.

This iMac Touch Rumor Has to Stop
It’s that time of the year again, when an Apple rumors blog reports that they’ve got intel about a touch-enabled iMac on its way. This time, LoopRumors takes the lead:
“LOOPRumors received a tidbit of information today suggesting Apple is planning to develop a hybrid OS into their next iMac. The iMac should be equipped with both Mac OS X and a touch interface for iOS.”
This is one of the most absurd things I’ve heard in a while. So why are we linking to this source? Because we’re tired of hearing this story, and this has to stop. The Mac OS X environment has always been clearly distanced from iOS (and iPhone OS before) and while it’s safe to say that we’ll see some kind of “contamination” in the future, the idea of a hybrid computer running both the operating systems is silly.
Apple is not going to ship hybrids, get over it. With all due respect, of course.
Enjoy your iPad, instead.
First Benchmarks Tell Us the iPad Is Faster Than the iPhone 4
Can you believe it? The iPhone 4 comes with better hardware than the iPad, it even runs the same A4 processor, but it turns out that the tablet might be faster than Apple’s new iPhone.
iFixit’s iPhone 4 Teardown Confirms 512 MB of RAM
The new iPhone comes out tomorrow, but iFixit has (as usual) managed to get a unit and tear it down. The result, unsurprisingly, confirms the rumored 512 MB of RAM, a bigger 3.7V 1420 mAh Li-Polymer battery and dual purpose steel frame / antenna.
Check out the full teardown here, and a few pictures after the break.
The First iPhone 4 Game?
The iPhone 4 has a retina display that’s perfect for showing off lots of gorgeous pixels. Low and behold, games are going to look gorgeous, and ngmoco’s Eliminate:GunRage for the iPhone 4 has you selecting a variety of weapons to blast those beautiful pixels into pieces. We didn’t figure the first game would be a gun game, but what the hell – bullet holes never looked so gorgeous on a mobile phone. Click past the break for juicy screens.
