A Simple Safari Extension to Shorten URLs

Safari 5 is Firefox in 2004: extensions are popping up from everywhere. Just take a look at Safari Extensions Tumblr to get an idea of how many tweaks have been submitted in just 3 days of existence. In this ocean of tweaks and addons though, it’s easy to get lost. If you’re looking for a simple extension to shorten URLs, and shorten them well, I think we’ve found one.

The “Shorturl Safari Extension” adds a button in the browser toolbar which lets you shorten links with a single click. Cool thing is, if the website you’re visiting has a custom shorturl, the extension will grab it correctly and allow you to copy it. This works for websites that use bit.ly’s custom domain features (such as MacStories’ mcstr.net links) or those that rely on rel=”shorturl” tags.

The only thing I’d like to see is support for post titles, which would be very handy for bloggers and users who, say, want to tweet a post. Anyway, this is the best extension to shorten links I’ve found so far. Have you got suggestions? Feel free to drop a comment below.
