My Newspaper: Your Own Google Reader Newsstand

So, reading on the iPad. The iPad is the perfect device to read, and we said it many times before. You’ve probably grown tired of hearing this story. The thing is, the device is so young and the opportunities in the App Store so big we can’t help but telling this story every time a new app comes out. And if the app is about catching up with news posted on your favorite blogs, I think you can understand us.

My Newspaper offers a new, fresh take on Google Reader, tailored to users who don’t need to refresh G. Reader every 2 minutes but want to sit down and enjoy some good content instead.

My Newspaper, recently released at $4.99 in the App Store, allows you to sign in with your Google Reader account and fetch news from your favorite sources. The main screen is called “the Newsstand” and displays all the news for a day as newspaper-like thumbnails. The more days you use the app, the more newspapers you get. It’s very simple and straightforward. The interface is clean and simple too, perhaps a little too much sometimes. I hope the developers will add some awesomeness in the future updates. But anyway, it’s very easy to understand for non-geek users, and that’s a good thing.

Tap on a newspaper and you’re given the news of the day. Headlines are arranged like a real newspaper, just like in The Early Edition (review) by Glasshouse Apps. Formatting is nice, but could be better. You can read articles with the typical RSS formatting, or switch over to original web view - thus losing the whole newspaper feeling. You can also swipe between pages, mark articles as read and star them.

My Newspaper is an interesting first attempt to build an alternative way of consuming your Google Reader feeds. At $4.99 [iTunes Link] it might be a little bit pricey, but I can see this used by people who don’t need the complexity of Reeder and are willing to try something new. Now the developers only need to focus on making it prettier and more stable.
