With Beta 7, Sparrow Gets Close To Being The Ideal Gmail App for Mac

It’s been a while since we last covered Sparrow, a native Gmail client for Mac. The first version of the app came out in early October, and the developers have been busy fixing bugs, introducing new features and refining the design in these past two months and a half. What started as a nice Gmail app clearly inspired by Loren Brichter’s Tweetie slowly evolved into a stable, unique and feature-rich Gmail app for the Mac. Read more

MacBook Air Mods: Composition Notebook, Angry Birds

The new MacBook Air is a thing of beauty. Like I tweeted a few days ago, a friend of mine bought the 11-inch model last week and I’m finding myself constantly trying to reach it to see how much Apple managed to squeeze into that tiny piece of aluminum. It’s thin. It’s fast. But I guess that at this point you’ve heard about that.

What you probably don’t know is that some users are coming up with neat MacBook Air mods that will make you want one even more. From the same guy who created the iPhone 4 Leica skin for the most sophisticated photographer comes the composition notebook MBA skin. You know, just to remember the good old school days. Or maybe not.

If you don’t feel like carrying an aluminum composition notebook around, perhaps some Angry Birds is what you’re looking for. It’s got the birds, the pigs – no slingshot though. It’d be nice to apply this skin once Angry Birds comes to the Mac. Because it is coming, right?

Want iOS Scrollbars On A Mac? There’s A Theme For That

In case you missed it at Apple’s Back to the Mac event, Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion” is getting redesigned scrollbars and a brand new scrolling system. In fact, Apple is taking iOS’ “rubber banding” effect and minimal, fading scrollbars to the Mac with the next major iteration due next year. As demoed by Apple’s Craig Federighi in the Mac App Store app running on Lion, scrollbars will behave similarly to iOS – you won’t any scrollbar if you’re touching the trackpad. Read more

Add Twtmore Shortening To Tweetie for Mac

By default, Loren Brichter’s Tweetie for Mac comes with Twitlonger shortening capabilities. That means, if you have a tweet longer than 140 characters (it usually happens for long iOS / Android debates, or Apple’s events commentary) Tweetie will automatically post that tweet using Twitlonger – a service that puts a link in a tweet to read the entire message in the browser. It works pretty well, but it doesn’t look exactly great.

Twtmore is a service that’s been in closed beta for some months, until the developers opened up its APIs for everyone to use. It’s similar to Twitlonger, but it’s beautiful. This is a twtmore page, for instance. As you can see, it’s delicious. Tweetie Twtmore is a SIMBL plugin (yep, another one) that replaces the default Twitlonger shortening feature with twtmore.

To install Tweetie Twtmore, make sure that SIMBL is installed on your computer. You can go download SIMBL for free here. Once SIMBL is running correctly, download the Tweetie Twtmore bundle, extract it and place the file in /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins or ~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins if you want to install it for all user or just your account, respectively. Restart Tweetie for Mac.

The plugin works great even if Tweetie for Mac will keep saying “Post with Twitlonger”. As you can see in the screenshots below, long tweets will be forwarded correctly to twtmore. Go download the plugin here. Read more

Classic Mac Icons Come To Life Again As Prints

Susan Kare is a well known designer who created many of the icons and interface elements for the original Apple Macintosh in the 80’s. After Apple, she worked at NeXT and Facebook. I guess there’s the chance you’ve seen one of her icons somewhere.

Now you can get the classic Mac icons in print edition. Available for purchase over at Kare Prints, you can choose from various sizes and have a personal inscription on larger prints.

iWork Out of Stock, iWork 11 Shows Up On Apple.com

Here’s an interesting tidbit from 9to5mac: according to an Apple Store employee “there is no iWork on the shelves, no iWork in Stock and none on the way”. iWork 09 seems to be out of stock at Apple retail stores and Amazon, although family packs are available on Amazon and Apple.com says the suite is available, but with a curious “New” label next to it.

According to previous rumors, the new version of iWork has been ready for some months and it’s simply awaiting a Mac App Store debut. The new Store will open on January 6th.

Now, is Apple going to make iWork 11 available in retail stores as well? If so, are we going to get the physical box before the Mac App Store downloads?

Also: is iWork.com ever going to get new features?
