FaceTime In The Middle Now Possible With A Jailbreak Hack

Whether it’s been blocked by carriers or Apple, FaceTime in the Middle East has been a highly discussed subject on tech blogs in the past weeks. First silently pulled from Apple’s website, then confirmed, then tested on Macs and iPods, the lack of FaceTime in those countries has pissed off quite a few users.

Now the story seems to be finally over with a hack available in Cydia that solves a problem caused by…we don’t know who caused it. The hack is called “FaceTime Hacktivator”, is developed by the iPhoneIslam team and it’s available for free in Cydia. Read more

Gmail Mobile: Snappier on iOS 4, Still Featuring Fuzzy Graphics

If you use Gmail as your default email client and you happen to use it on your iPhone browser as well (because quite frankly, it’s just better than Mail.app) you may have noticed that Google rolled out a few changes in the past weeks.
The Google Mobile team made Gmail snappier with a much smoother scrolling on iOS 4 and managed to fix that weird issue with scrollbars continuously moving when scrolling the page. Gmail mobile has fixed scrollbars now. Yay. Read more

Apple Reportedly Developing A “Special SIM Card” for iPhone

Interesting rumor posted on GigaOM: according to “sources inside European carriers”, Apple has been working with SIM-manufacturer Gemalto to create a “special SIM card” to integrate into every iPhone in order to cut carriers out of the iPhone retail game.

The SIM would still require the device to operate on a carrier’s network, but users wouldn’t be required to go to a carrier retail store to buy and activate an iPhone. Users would be able to buy the iPhone via web or local Apple Store and activate it with the App Store system. It would be a major shift in the mobile eco-system.

Anyway, The White iPhone Was Delayed Because It Didn’t Take “Good Pictures”

Last night an Apple spokesperson told Reuters the white iPhone 4 has been delayed once again and the released date pushed back to Spring 2011. We speculated that it wouldn’t make much sense for Apple to keep on delaying the white model and release it a few months before the likely announcement of the iPhone 5, so if they’re going to really do this - it’s got to be something more than a simple color shift.

Oh but wait, Boy Genius Report claims the project has been canceled entirely. Their source confirms the white iPhone 4 is definitely not happening.

According to a tidbit by Cult of Mac, anyway, it seems like the white unit would need a major internal redesign to work as Steve wants. One of their sources close to Apple confirmed that the white iPhone has been delayed because of light leaking problems, specifically light leaking out and causing the camera sensor to take inaccurate pictures. “They’re washed out”, the source claims. Volume Controls In The Multitasking Bar with App Switcher Volume | Cydia Store

Many iPhone users, especially jailbreakers who’re constantly tinkering with their devices, think Apple should have enabled more customization options for the multitasking bar. The current version of the “tray” only allows to change between apps, close them, access widget controls and screen rotation lock on the left.

App Switcher Volume is a new tweak available in Cydia which lets you adjust your device’s volume with a slider in the multitasking bar. The tweak will add its slider right under the music widget controls and that’s it. Useful if you really can’t stand adjusting volume using the iPhone’s default buttons, which perhaps you’ve remapped to do something else, like snapping photos.

App Switcher is available at $0.99 under Big Boss repository. Read more

iM: Upcoming Instant Messaging App for iPhone That Looks Beautiful

Every instant messaging app for iPhone and iPad I’ve tried so far looks ugly and comes with a lot of features I don’t need. I just want a simple app that plugs into my iChat account and lets me chat with my buddies, I don’t need a full-featured, multi-service, multi-account, multi-godknowswhatelse ugly piece of software that comes with “unique custom wallpaper capabilities” and “exclusive Facebook chat integration”.

I want something simple, focused, beautiful and stable. So that’s why I’m looking forward to iM app: developed by Trevor Sheridan and Steve Itterly and designed by the talented Mathieu White, iM aims at becoming the ultimate solution for iPhone users who’ve always been disappointed by the state of instant messaging app on iOS.
