MacStories Product Review: Sena Folio Case for iPad

It is no secret Sena makes beautiful products. From travel cases to sleeves and integrated keyboard folio designs, Sena’s leather quality and manufacturing process is top notch. In fact, I don’t think any other company I know of makes better leather accessories than Sena’s. Over the past weeks I’ve been able to test a Folio Case for the iPad, an elegant case with a portfolio book design that adds a very “sophisticated” tone to the device.

The case is made of genuine leather that’s very rigid (it’s got the same feel of the first day I used it, and I’ve carried this case around a lot) and has got a soft velvet lining in the inside, right below the iPad. Leather and velvet are premium materials in the Folio Case, and I can say that after weeks they still look and feel like the first days. From a quality standpoint, that’s just what you’d expect from Sena.

As for the options provided by the case, the feature set is interesting as well. The Folio is meant to be used on a desk with the iPad in landscape mode, as there is an integrated collapsible back stand that will allow you to keep the iPad next to, say, your computer screen to watch a movie, or use a dedicated Twitter client. Indeed, this turned out to be very useful with my office desk (where I also keep my iMac), although I haven’t been able to use the Folio as a stand on smaller desks due to the fact that the front cover, when placed behind the iPad’s screen, will require a bit of space. However, the Folio on my large office desk with an iMac next to it looks just great. Plus, it’s got a snap closure on the back and front to always keep your iPad in place – even when in landscape stand mode. That’s pretty cool.

Inside the Folio Case, there’s a series of pocket slots for credit cards, ID and any kind of small piece of paper you’d like to always carry around with the iPad. I wish there was room for a small stylus like the Pogo, or a USB key. I’m not the kind of guy that has so many cards to carry around, so I guess the feature is not really for me. Still, I can say the quality is good and the slots resistant. The Folio does of course come with cutouts for the volume, home and sleep buttons, but there’s also a front-facing camera hole that I guess Sena put to guarantee compatibility with the iPad 2. I really would like to see the Folio play nicely with the next-gen iPad. The case also provides charge and speaker openings. In my tests, I’ve found the Sena Folio Case to do a good job at keeping the iPad snug and entirely usable.

At $99.99, the Sena Folio Case for iPad doesn’t come cheap – but you pay for quality and state-of-the-art craftsmanship. Available in six different colors, the Folio Case is an elegant and beautiful product you should consider if you’re looking for a leather book style case.
