Time for another security update, folks. Apple has just released the Security Update 2010-006 for Snow Leopard (server and client versions) which is available here or, as usual, in Software Update.

The guys over at iLounge have been doing a little digging into their new iPod nano and they have discovered that it contains a secret diagnostic mode called iTerm. If you fancy a peek, then you need to reset the iPod by pressing and holding the sleep and volume down buttons until the Apple logo appears. Once that happens, you have a choice. If you want to enable Disk mode, which will give you a retro iPod black and white screen, and, as the name suggests, makes the iPod visible to a computer as an external USB drive, you need to hold down both volume buttons during the reset. Great news, folks! VLC for iPad has been approved by Apple and is now propagating in the App Store. New Zealand users can find the app already available here, anyone else will have to wait a few hours to see the app available for sale in iTunes.

Mailplane, the app that brings Gmail to your Mac’s desktop, has been recently updated with new features and bug fixes. New features: Support for Gmail’s new Priority Inbox; @usemailroom’s TrueView, which enables two counters, one for unread and one for unseen messages; you can now drag a Mailplane URL from the title bar to any application; Rapportive - which replaces the sponsored links on the right-hand side with useful contact information (this is an excellent feature, there’s even free add-ons for Firefox, Safari, and Chrome); Mailplane can now automatically open ‘safe’ attachments after downloading like Safari, just check the preference button; and auto-insert-BCC feature lets you integrate with a CRM, HelpDesk or similar service. This story reminds me of the Italian launch of the iPhone 4 back in July: lots of pre-orders, a few units shipped to carriers, people still waiting since July for an iPhone 4. True story: my girlfriend is still waiting for one from 3 Italia, and I had to buy a French one using eBay. Another friend of mine ordered an iPhone 4 in June and is still waiting for the Apple Store to call him back and tell him his unit has arrived. Read more
Quick update for all those of you wondering what’s going on with iOS 4.1 jailbreak: with a series of tweets a few minutes ago, @pod2g has confirmed that he’s now working on the exploit that will make iOS 4.1 jailbreakable on his own. He’s not affiliated with the Chronic and iPhone Dev Team anymore, and the exploit will be his independent creation.
As @pod2g also wrote on Twitter, this is no big deal for final users as both the Chronic and iPhone Dev Team has been given all the details behind the exploit. Pod2g is not a jailbreak tool maker, he’s only focused on making the bootrom exploit work on 4.1.

Together with the announcement that more than 3 million business have gone Google, the search giant has also confirmed that iPad users will get full mobile Google Docs editing soon. No release date for the new feature has been announced yet.
Right now, if you try to log in Docs from your iPad you only get a viewing interface - so this is great news for anyone who uses Google Docs (like us) every day. Read more
Reeder is my favorite RSS reader for iPhone and iPad. I might even say that Reeder is one of my favorite iPad apps, together with Twitter, Flipboard and Simplenote. When developer Silvio Rizzi told me I could get into the Reeder for Mac testing team I immediately jumped in.
Reeder for Mac will be awesome. I have no doubts about that, but we can’t share all the details now. The app is still in its early development stages, many things will probably change by the release date and most of all: don’t ask for a release date now. I don’t know when Reeder for Mac is going to be available. Nor do we have “invites” for the beta or are in the position to hook you up with a beta copy.
We had permissions to post a couple of screenshots form the latest build of Reeder for Mac. It’s going to be the ultimate RSS app on OS X. Read more
