UpdateBar for Mac Sends Status Updates To Multiple Social Networks

If you’re tired of using the browser to post the latest Steve Jobs spoof video on your Facebook wall, or don’t want to send quick updates using a full-featured Twitter client because you’re afraid of being distracted by the amount of content in your timeline, a new app called UpdateBar provides an easy way to post status updates on multiple social networking sites at once. Released at $0.99 in the Mac App Store, UpdateBar does one thing well: it displays an unobtrusive popup from your Mac menubar, allowing you to send a status update to Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Identica. You can configure these services in the settings, and choose which one to use from a dropdown menu that lists all your available accounts.

The app can shorten links using is.gd and goo.gl, and you enter your custom URL shortening service as well. There’s no way to trigger the popup window with a keyboard shortcut yet, and I hope this will be implemented in a future update. The possibility to quickly drag photos from the desktop onto UpdateBar’s window would also be a nice addition.

Qwiki iPad App Released, Lets You Explore 3 Million Topics

Qwiki, the “information experience” winner of TechCrunch Disrupt last year, released its first official iPad app today, allowing users to visually explore more than 3 million topics including people, places and facts directly from the tablet. For those unfamiliar with Qwiki, the service has built an incredibly appealing and engaging technology that, upon entering a keyword for a topic you want to know more about, will start “talking” to you with a human voice, also including text, animated images, videos, slides, infographics. Qwiki is a unique, rich experience built on top of web technologies – try it out here using your web browser to get the idea.

The iPad app is equally impressive. Once you fire up Qwiki for iPad, you’ll be asked to share your location so the system can load the nearest points of interest, and display them on a Google Map. From the main page, you can view the “Qwiki of the day”, see daily qwikis and popular ones, explore places near you or simply search for a new topic. A bar at the bottom allows you to share a qwiki with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, or via email. The interface design is clean and similar to the website, the app responsive and pretty fast overall. A qwiki takes a few seconds to load, and as soon as the voice starts speaking you’ll be able to tap on the images included in the slide to view them, tap on videos, hide the textual description. The app lets you swipe between slides, and quickly jump to related topics by tapping on a button in the toolbar. The results seem accurate, as they’re based on keywords and topics found in the qwiki you were playing. When you’re done browsing qwikis and related material, you can read more on a topic thanks to Wikipedia, Google, Fotopedia and Youtube integration.

CalendarBar for Mac Updated with New Features

Clean Cut Code’s CalendarBar, a great menu bar app for OS X, lets you see events from iCal, Facebook and Google Calendar all inside one great looking app. We reviewed CalendarBar back in March and we really like it.

Today, Clean Cut Code has updated the app to version 1.1 with some very nice additions. iCal tasks/todos are now supported from the preferences pane and it now also supports Alfred / LaunchBar / QuickSilver quick launch applications. When CalendarBar is running, simply start typing “CalendarBar” into Alfred (LaunchBar or QuickSilver as well), and it forces the app to dropdown from the menu bar so you can access the app without using your mouse. (Thanks to Don Southard for helping us test multiple launch apps.)

The developers also added support for BusyCal and Google Calendar multiple sign-ins. You can now configure relative day formatting (today, tomorrow, etc) and make timed events not span multiple days. CalendarBar also received a new app icon along with some bug fixes. If you still haven’t picked up CalendarBar from the Mac App Store, maybe you should mark your calendar to do so. Check for updated via the Mac App Store or buy the app now for $2.99.

 


Researchers Discover iPhone File That Keeps Track Of Your Moves

Security researchers Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden have discovered a file in Apple’s iOS local backup system that keeps track of your entire location history, in format perfectly readable by a computer. The file, by default stored unencrypted in the iOS database that can be backed up to a computer using iTunes, keeps track of “everywhere you go” by triangulating the 3G signal against the nearest cell towers, and offers a way to private detectives or people who might get their hands on your device / computer to have access to your moves in the past. The researchers have also created an open-source app called iPhoneTracker that recognizes the file from your local iOS backup, parses the results and displays your most-visited locations on a map. The screenshot above, for instance, was taken using my iPhone’s unencrypted backup.

As the researchers note on iPhoneTracker’s webpage, it is unclear why Apple is doing this. Cellphone network providers have been allegedly tracking users’ location for years through their towers, but they never stored the location info locally on a device, nor did they provide a way to back up this information on a computer and parse it. Allan and Warden (who’s a former Apple employee) speculate this might be functional to new location features Apple is working on for future versions of iOS; the location tracking was apparently introduced with iOS 4 last year, and data collected so far might come in handy for the company to build an online location-based social service for iPhone and iPad users. The file, however, was only discovered in the past weeks, and the researchers claim it’s present both on iPhones and iPad 3G units.

Apple has made it possible for almost anybody – a jealous spouse, a private detective – with access to your phone or computer to get detailed information about where you’ve been,” said Pete Warden, one of the researchers.

Warden and Allan point out that the file is moved onto new devices when an old one is replaced: “Apple might have new features in mind that require a history of your location, but that’s our specualtion. The fact that [the file] is transferred across [to a new iPhone or iPad] when you migrate is evidence that the data-gathering isn’t accidental.” But they said it does not seem to be transmitted to Apple itself.

Apple declined to comment, but it’s very clear that the file is created and stored locally without an explicit user’s agreement. As noted by the researchers and other security / privacy experts polled by the Guardian, Apple is storing both location data and timestamps in a readable format that can be accessed from a stolen (possibly also jailbroken) device or a computer. I have tried the iPhoneTracker application personally, and while it really works with unencrypted backups generated using iTunes, choosing to encrypt a backup breaks iPhoneTracker’s functionality – thus granting users an additional level of security. The file, however, is still there – Apple doesn’t offer a way to avoid tracking of your moves.

The discovery of this location-tracking file in the iOS backup system is worrying as it raises question on Apple’s user privacy policy, and the reason why such data is collected without a user’s consent. Apple has been rumored to working on new location features for iOS 5, so the location info might be a solid data foundation for the company to build a new social location service. Reminder: Apple Q2 Financial Results Today – 5 PM ET

Later today starting at 5:00 PM ET (2:00 PM PT) Apple will hold the Q2 2011 earnings call to announce their financial results, shortly after the markets close. In Q1 2011, the company posted a record revenue of $26.74 billion with 7.33 million iPads sold, 16.24 million iPhones and 4.13 million Macs. Today’s financial results will offer an insight into Verizon iPhone sales, which were rumored to be “low” and “under Apple expectations”, whilst AT&T has announced this morning 3.6 million iPhone activations in the first quarter. AT&T also revealed 322,000 3G tablets were sold in the quarter, but didn’t specify whether or not they were Apple iPads. Notes from Apple’s lawsuit against Samsung also indicated the company sold 60 million iPod touches since 2007, 19 million iPads and 108 million iPhones by March 2011. Considering Apple previously revealed 15 million iPads were sold from April to December 2010, analysts are expecting a minimum of 4.2 million iPads sold in the quarter. Analysts polled in the past weeks also predicted Apple might have sold nearly 20 million iPhones in the second fiscal quarter.

AT&T Q1: 3.6 Million iPhones Activated, 322k Tablets

U.S. carrier AT&T reported its first-quarter financial results this morning, announcing a 10.2% of wireless revenue growth, with an 8.6% increase in wireless service revenues. The company reports the quarter that ended on March 31 was the best-ever first-quarter with smartphone sales over 5.5 million; consolidated revenue topped $31.2 billion in the first quarter.

As far as the iPhone goes, AT&T announced 3.6 million iPhone activations in the quarter, with 23% new subscribers. The company stressed how they managed to activate 1 million more iPhones from the year-ago quarter, a remarkable result considering Apple ended AT&T’s exclusivity of the device in the US with the release of the Verizon iPhone. Following these numbers, many are already speculating the big exodus to Verizon Wireless from AT&T didn’t happen. It’s too early to tell, as we also want to wait for Apple’s Q2 results later today, but it’s worth noting that Verizon iPhone sales were rumored to be low, under Apple’s initial expectations.

iPhone activations increased nearly 1 million year over year to 3.6 million, with 23 percent of subscribers new to AT&T; iPhone subscriber churn unchanged year over year.

AT&T had another strong quarter of smartphone sales. (Smartphones are voice and data devices with an advanced operating system to better manage data and Internet access.) More than 5.5 million smartphones were sold in the first quarter, the third-highest quarter ever and an increase of more than 60 percent year over year. During the quarter, 3.6 million iPhones were activated. Approximately 65 percent of postpaid sales were smartphones.

AT&T also revealed 322,000 tablets were added in the quarter, although it’s unclear how many of them were iPad 2 3G units, older iPad 1 models, or other non-Apple devices. Statements from the press release after the break. Read more


2 Million Apple TVs Sold So Far?

According to a “survey of Apple suppliers” by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities relayed by AppleInsider, shipments of the second-generation Apple TV have reached 2 million estimated units, with 820,000 units sold last quarter. The device originally went on sale in October 2010, and whilst Apple has always been touting the Apple TV as a “hobby” for a very few percentage of Mac and iPhone users, the second-gen Apple TV is based on an entirely new streaming system from the iTunes cloud, and AirPlay. The Apple TV is priced at $99, and can be paired with an iPhone or iPad for remote controlling functionalities.

Shipments of the second-generation Apple TV continue to be strong, reaching more than 2 million estimated units since the device launched late last year, according to a new report. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities revealed the results of his survey of Apple suppliers on Tuesday. The numbers show that sales of the Apple TV have held relatively steady since the device first went on sale last October.

In December, Apple announced 1 million Apple TVs had been sold in three months. Although the report by Ming-Chi Kuo claims 820k units have been sold in Q2 with shipments topping 2 million, an Apple TV sales estimate from October of last year suggested that Apple could sell 1 million Apple TVs per quarter. Apple is set to announced its Q2 2011 financial results later today, but just like the iPod touch Apple TV sales numbers shouldn’t be disclosed by the company.

In the past months, Apple has focused on fixing compatibility issues with the Apple TV and various HDTVs, as well as adding new features to the box like NBA League Pass and MLB.tv integration. Apple is also rumored to be considering licensing the AirPlay streaming technology to third-party TV makers – a move that would allow the company to receive royalties, and expand the AirPlay userbase with millions of non-Apple TVs connected to iOS devices.


RockMelt Coming To The iPhone With “Desktop Sync” Feature [Update: Available]

RockMelt, the social browser based on the open-source Chromium engine that aims at enriching the desktop browsing experience with visual previews and Facebook / Twitter integration, is coming to the iPhone. As reported by Venturebeat, the developers – who have received several rounds of funding in the past months and are committed to making RockMelt the ultimate social browser for Mac & Windows, especially after the departure of Flock – have been busy creating a smaller iPhone version that’s not really a full-featured browser, but it’s focused on the “app edge” aspect of RockMelt. On the desktop, RockMelt features a series of vertical sidebars that display the latest updates from your Facebook and Twitter friends, or emails from Gmail contacts, and so forth. In the developers’ vision of today’s browsing, people are more likely to discover content through status updates from social media, rather than manually typing a URL or spend hours looking for news on Google. That’s why the iPhone version – coming soon to the App Store – will be focused on letting you quickly open the app, and check on the latest updates from your friends. You can search and browse the web regularly, too, but the focus is on “favorite feeds”, read later and most accessed bookmarks.

Most mobile browsers provide a similar experience to PC browsing, just with a touch interface and smaller screen. But RockMelt co-founder and chief executive Eric Vishria pointed out that when you’re waiting in line for a cup of coffee, you don’t want to whip out your phone and type in a long website address. Instead, you’re more likely to check the latest updates on Facebook or Twitter.

With Facebook and Twitter support, users will be able to send their own status updates, or check on links shared by their friends. These links will be previewed inline by RockMelt below a Facebook message or a tweet, and you can also decide to view them later thanks to the Instapaper-like “read later” option introduced in RockMelt beta 2. Last, the iPhone version will feature a “desktop sync” option that will allow you to sync your bookmarks and, we assume, read later material across the iPhone and RockMelt for the desktop. This sounds very similar to what Mozilla did with Firefox Home, and we’re looking forward to seeing sync in action.

Real Racing 2 HD with 1080p TV-out Now Available

Last month, development studio Firemint announced they were working on an update to the popular Real Racing 2 HD that, thanks to the iPad 2’s hardware capabilities, would allow users to enjoy the game on their HDTVs with full 1080p TV-out support. The system developed by Firemint, unlike what Apple has demoed so far,  enables the game to run in fullscreen without black borders on the TV; this new feature doesn’t rely on scaling content for the HDTV, it simply runs in fullscreen mode at 30 frames per second. While playing Real Racing 2 HD with Apple’s TV adapter connected to the TV, the iPad will turn into a standalone screen displaying extra information like map and race position, yet retaining the gyroscope-based controls and touch functionalities.

The update has been released in the App Store, and Firemint provides detailed instructions about 1080p TV-out in its FAQ section:

Connect the Apple digital AV adapter to your iPad 2 via the 30-pin dock connector. Then, plug one end of the HDMI cable into the adapter and the other into a HDMI port on your HDMI-compatible display. Check that the correct channel or input mode is selected. Finally, turn on your iPad 2 and launch Real Racing 2 HD.
