Kickstarter Project - The Cosmonaut: A Wide-Grip Stylus for Touch Screens

Last year before everyone was using Kickstarter, a new iPhone accessory showed up on the site and was a phenomenal success. It was “The Glif” - a tripod mount / stand. We’ve covered it’s rise to popularity here on MacStories. The creators of The Glif, Dan Provost and Thomas Gerhardt, are back with a new project, named The Cosmonaut.

The Cosmonaut is a minimal, wide-grip capacitive stylus for touch screen devices (not just the iPad). They modeled this new product after a dry-erase marker since it makes more sense on an iPad than a small stylus that people use on smartphones.

iPad 2 Price Comparison Across The World

Thanks to Italian blog Setteb.it you can easily check how much the iPad 2 price varies across most of the 25 countries launching the iPad 2 tomorrow. As is always the case for internationally sold products, and for a variety of reasons, the price varies quite substantially from country to country - even when currency and tax discrepancies are removed. The iPad 2 is no exception and some countries are paying a little more than their US counterparts, whilst some are paying far more.

The site tried to take the key variables of currency and tax out of the comparison by converting the local prices into the Euro and adding a rough sales tax average of 9.2% to the US prices. What was revealed was that the US had the cheapest prices for the iPad 2 but Australia was not far behind, only 14 Euros more expensive on the base 16GB WiFi only model and had the next cheapest prices for every other model except the 64GB WiFi + 3G which New Zealand had for the second cheapest price at only 18 Euros more than the US.

Comparatively the iPad 2 had the highest markup in Sweden and Norway at 100 Euros more for the 16GB WiFi model in Sweden and more than a 200 Euro markup in Norway for the 64GB WiFi + 3G. Click here for the full table of prices.

Major Publishers in Support of Inklings iPad Textbooks

Inkling, an iPad textbook startup, has just announced that it has won financial backing from McGraw-Hill and Pearson, the two biggest names in the textbook business. The exact amount was not disclosed, except that it was a “multimillion dollar” financing.

Matt MacInnis, the Founder and chief executive of Inkling, said their goal involves using the content of an existing textbook then adding multimedia and interactive content for the iPad. Inkling started up right after the announcement of the iPad in January of last year. Based in San Francisco, the startup has now released 14 textbooks and more than 100 titles by this fall.

There is other competition building iPad textbooks, MacInnis acknowledged. Competitors like ScrollMotion, and Kno but he argued that everyone else is adding ‘limited’ features to a PDF of the textbook and that competitors e-books are developed by the publishers’ business divisions without very much input from the original textbook creators. Alternately, Inkling wants to publish apps that feel like they were built for the iPad, which means working with the books’ authors to create new content.
