iOS 5 Will Apparently Support Nitro In Web Apps That Are Pinned To The Home Screen

Safari received quite a substantial speed bump with iOS 4.3 when Apple added the Nitro engine, a powerful JavaScript engine. However, some were left disappointed when it was revealed that the engine didn’t work with web apps that had been pinned to the home screen.

It seems that iOS 5 will eventually fix this inconsistency and bring those web apps up to speed. It comes after a user on Hacker News answered a question asking whether Nitro was included for those web apps pinned to the home screen.

This is probably breaking my NDA to say this, but yes, they did. Web.app now has the ‘dynamic-codesigning’ entitlement, which enables Nitro.

Apps that use the UIWebView alternative to Safari apparently won’t be getting Nitro, though the same user says that this is a security restriction rather than an inconsistency.

BBC iPlayer Rolling Out To Western Europe By Year’s End

A number of countries in Western Europe will be the first to experience the BBC iPlayer outside of the UK as the BBC begins its international rollout this year. Fans of BBC content such as Doctor Who that live in Western Europe will be the first that will be able to access it and other BBC shows (including archive content) on the iPlayer app available on the iPad.

The BBC will begin the rollout for Western Europeans sometime before the end of the year and at a monthly cost of something under $10 – the fee has yet to be finalised. The content library will be available on the iPad app but only in English at this stage.

For its international rollout of the BBC iPlayer, Jana Bennett who works for BBC Worldwide said to The Guardian that they are looking forward to adding collections of content for various genres including music, comedy and documentaries. She says that the international version is a “different proposition” from its British counterpart that is primarily for catch-up content.

The freedom from catchup means that we’ve got a lot more flexibility in terms of what we put on there and how we present it.

Funnel is an Expressive News App Based on Google News

Looking for all the hot topics of today? Patrick Rhone of Minimal Mac points to a very cool looking iPhone app called Funnel, which reminds me of Marcos Weskamp’s Newsmap, which provides a distinct way to view upcoming topics on Google News. While I haven’t visited the “Marumushi Newsmap” (as I called it when I was but a young teen) in a long time, provided you have Flash installed or you use Google Chrome, you can check out how news aggregates in real time. If we return to Funnel, it’s practically the same thing (which is great considering you can have Newsmap on the go). The bigger the news, the more popular that particular news item is. You can download it here (currently I’m having trouble pulling it up in the App Store). Let us know what you think if it’s available in your part of town.

Boxee Getting an Update on Mac, PC, and Linux This Fall

Just because Boxee’s released the Boxee Box doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten about our beloved desktop clients. Straight from the Boxee blog, Avner Ronen writes:

We are going to release an update for the downloadable version this fall, and hope to keep it more up to speed with the CE version going forward. We also hope to make the open source version of the downloadable version easier to use for people who want to build out their own versions of Boxee. That said, updates for the downloadable version will most likely lag behind the versions of Boxee for devices.

Before Boxee released the Boxee Box with D-Link, their efforts were focused on supporting their device for consumers. Now that the device is on the market (and from the sounds of things doing okay), the Boxee team wants to bring an updated version back to the desktop to remove usability issues. Lastly, the company wants to open-source their app so developers can bring Boxee to new platforms and devices. That’s pretty cool if you ask me.
