iPhone OS 4.0, The User Centric OS

To tell the truth, I didn’t have God knows how big expectations for the iPhone OS 4.0 keynote. Sure I was hoping that Apple would announce new features and functions, but I actually didn’t really expect the event to turn out this good. Because yes, in my opinion the latest keynote has been one of the most important since years, which is gonna be remembered in the future as the day Apple marked the path for something new and revolutionary. Yesterday, Apple showed us  that there could…there should be a better way to work with a mobile phone. To use a mobile phone. To enjoy the web on a mobile phone.

Apple has reinvented mobile operating systems.

You Can Enable Multitasking on the iPhone 3G

Right after Steve announced yesterday that iPhone OS 4.0 multitasking is going to be exclusive to iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3rd Gen., people started complaining. Steve said that due to hardware limitations these devices won’t be able to support multitasking, but it turns out that some people have started looking into the OS beta and found out that, actually, it’s possible to have multitasking on the iPhone 3G.

iPhone OS 4.0 Is Already Jailbroken

It happened in less than 24 hours. A few minutes ago, MuscleNerd from the Dev Team posted this tweet that proves that the jailbreak for iPhone OS 4.0 is already possible.

There’s a video after the break, with Cydia and Veency running on a 4.0 device. Now we only have to wait and see what the jailbreak community will come up with, considering all the features that Apple apparently “borrowed” from Cydia, like multitasking and inline spell check. We’ll see.

iPhone OS 4.0: Multitasking, Enterprise, and Folder Thoughts

Oh my goodness, where do I start on iPhone OS 4.0? I’m sure you guys already know about the features. You’re obsessed with multitasking and perhaps a little concerned about iAds. But what’s really captivating is just how much this will change mobile productivity. I want to focus on what the next iPhone OS will deliver you, how it compares to the competitors’ current methods, and how it will change the way you use your iPhone for your daily activities. iPhone OS 4.0, Coming to the iPad This Fall

You won’t be able to install the iPhone OS 4.0 on your iPad this summer. No, you’ll have to wait some more months, because Apple has announced it will be available this fall.

While I can understand that the iPad has just been released and they’re badly working on the iPhone version right now, before the keynote started I was hoping there would be a contemporary release for both the devices. Turns out we’ll have to wait instead, and keep our iPads without multitasking. (Well, until jailbreak will come).

All in all, like I said in the live chat today, I expect Apple to change the name of iPhone OS to, at least, iPad OS for the new device.

No, You Won’t Be Able to Multitask On Your iPhone 3G

If you have an iPhone 3G, or a second gen iPod Touch, I’m really sorry for you guys. You won’t be able to use the new multitasking feature of iPhone OS 4.0 with them. Actually Steve Jobs mentioned that these devices will be able to do “many things”, but multitasking won’t be one of them. Clearly we know that they can indeed run backgrounding apps with jailbreak extensions, but Apple doesn’t seem to care about it. Also, no mentioned about first gen iPhones and iPods.

Anyway, I bet the jailbreak community will come up with new solutions and enable multitasking (which is there in the firmware) even for these devices. Until that time, you might want to upgrade to a 3GS. Or perhaps the new models that will come out this summer.

iPhone OS 4.0: Predictions and Assorted Thoughts

So, Apple will hold a media event on April 8th to give us a sneak peek into the future of iPhone OS 4.0. As you can guess, the 4.0 update will be one of the most important updates the iPhone will go through this year, as it will mark the path Apple is following regarding its mobile phone, most of all when compared to the recently releases iPad.

Will it be nothing more than a performance update issued for a new device to be released in June? Or will it bring brand new features to make the iPhone a complete different device from the iPad?

I say both, with some exceptions.

George Hotz Strikes Back: Announces New iPhone Jailbreak, iPad Plans

George Hotz, the genius behind the popular jailbreak tool blackra1n, is back.

With a brief post on his personal blog he’s announced (and documented with video) that he’s working on a new version of the jailbreak, which will be untethered (means the device doesn’t need assistance from a computer to boot) and will work on all the current tethered-only models (iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 2G & 3G). And with a final note he says “it will probably work on iPad too”.

Seems like we won’t be waiting that long for multitasking on the iPad after all.

Optimizing a Jailbroken iPhone

If you have a jailbroken iPhone, it’s very likely that you installed a lot of apps, tweaks and extensions that are now slowing down your device. Perhaps you noticed that it’s not as fast as it used to be, applications like Mail take a little longer to start up, you have to respring every 30 minutes to see an increment in speed. You know why? Because the stuff you install from Cydia eats up memory, a lot of memory sometimes. Winterboard, for example, can take a lot of unoccupied RAM if you start enabling dozens of themes and graphical modifications; same applies for other apps like Action Menu, Pro Switcher - all these things constantly run in the background (they are based on MobileSubstrate) and they are the reason why your iPhone is slowing down.

Fortunately, there are some tricks and tips you can follow to optimize your iPhone, free up a lot of memory without the need of respringing / rebooting and get a fast and stable device once again. Here’s how.
