VanillaSurf, The Best Alternative to Safari for iPhone

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, you should have read that Opera, the popular Norwegian browser, is coming to the iPhone. While many people - including me - thought that it was just crazy to port Opera to iPhone OS at first, it turned out that the browser has been completely rewritten from the ground up to follow Apple’s rules and it should be released soon in the App Store.

Especially for browsers, Apple has a very strict policy in the App Store: they must be based on MobileSafari, they can’t use their own engine or anything else, they just can apply some graphical modifications, use fullscreen mode and some other features. This means the App Store saw the rise of hundreds of alternatives to Safari, some good and some real shit, that started implementing custom buttons, different use of tabs, fullscreen and more options for bookmarks.

Hackers Find New Exploit for iPhone 3GS with new Bootrom: Gull1hack

We knew this was gonna happen, maybe not this soon. Seems like a group of hackers have found an exploit to achieve the untethered jailbreak on the iPhone 3GS with the new bootrom that should have been very hard to hack.

“This Exploit works on ALL iPhone and iPod Touches.

While booting, we overun the buffer memory, letting the iPhone think there is something wrong; But in the moment it tries to enter safe mode, we send a boot signal like Blackra1n or Redsn0w.”

Now you guys just have to wait. Still no words from the Dev Team though, we’ll see.

Hulu Queue with Hqueue. Review and Giveaway.

One of my favorite features in Hulu is the ability to queue videos, so that when I get to school (where bandwidth is considerably better), I can quickly go through a couple of shows between classes. Although my friends and I share what we watch between our accounts, occasionally the time comes when I’m chilling in the deli just off campus, talking about shows with my friends, and need a quick reminder of what latest episode of House I’ve got plugged in. No longer is there a need to yank out your laptop for such things, because A Good Company has a simple (and deliciously pretty) application for doing just what I described above: giving you a preview of everything you have in queue.

Quickly Switch to the Previous Application with Last App

Last App is a new and cool application available in Cydia (yes, I’m back into the jailbreaking world) which allows you to switch back and forth between the app that’s running on your iPhone and the one that was previously running.

Just assign an activation method in the Activator settings (mine is “double tap on status bar”) and Last app will immediately switch to the “last application” that was running before you opened another one. You can also choose to background the running app before switching.

I find myself using it a lot. It’s fast, useful and free.

Mouseposé 3, An Awesome Compliment to Screencasts

I like applications that make my life easier. Anything that helps me avoid post production for example is usually something I’ll fall in love with if I can apply it to my work. If you noticed in the last screencast, I was able to better display screen shortcuts sans what Screenflow offered me. While Screenflow is certainly an excellent tool, its specific text tools were not geared towards my application. Instead, I was using something called Mouseposé, which is a must have if you ever do screencasts. Many of you probably already know about it, or even have it. I just came across this wonderful tool, and would like to share my walkthrough with all the other new screencasters out there.
