Tim Thaler has maximized the floor space in his kitchen, and also found a solution for an island - he hid the island in the floor. Tim’s island raisies up and down with an iPhone app and a tap.

Tim has an unfinished utility/storage room under in his basement below the kitchen. A hydraulic scissor lift is at bolted to the cement floor below, and a small frame was built on top of the scissor lift table. On top of that frame is the subfloor, flooring, and then the island. The cabinet doors are on the other side (as seen below), and have safety switches that cut off the electricity from Smarthome INSTEON switches, and prevent it from moving when the doors are not fully closed.
The iPhone app is called SmartLinc and with it you can schedule and control your INSTEON-compatible devices from your iPhone or web browser. The app can do a lot more, this is just one feature. To read more, check out SmartHome’s Apps page.
Sexy kitchen by the way, my wife and I are building a new home this year so I’m taking notes Tim! It’s a nice concept but unless you have extra cash sitting around, a hydraulic scissor lift is not cheap, especially if you’re going to use it as a kitchen appliance.
