Optimizing a Jailbroken iPhone

If you have a jailbroken iPhone, it’s very likely that you installed a lot of apps, tweaks and extensions that are now slowing down your device. Perhaps you noticed that it’s not as fast as it used to be, applications like Mail take a little longer to start up, you have to respring every 30 minutes to see an increment in speed. You know why? Because the stuff you install from Cydia eats up memory, a lot of memory sometimes. Winterboard, for example, can take a lot of unoccupied RAM if you start enabling dozens of themes and graphical modifications; same applies for other apps like Action Menu, Pro Switcher - all these things constantly run in the background (they are based on MobileSubstrate) and they are the reason why your iPhone is slowing down.

Fortunately, there are some tricks and tips you can follow to optimize your iPhone, free up a lot of memory without the need of respringing / rebooting and get a fast and stable device once again. Here’s how.

Mailroom, the Better, Faster GMail Client

When Federico and I initially reviewed Mailroom, our review wasn’t exactly the most positive. We felt the app wasn’t ready for the primetime, and I didn’t want to leave a sour taste in people’s mouths. The application really did have potential, and it seems the developer has been listening to the influx of suggestions. Today, I’d like to Re-Review Mailroom, because it has become a really great GMail client for the iPhone.

Wikipedia on the iPhone, We Have a Winner: Meet Articles.

I’ve always wished there was a decent Wikipedia client for iPhone. A well designed, feature rich, clean, simple, fast Wikipedia client, not that crap they sell for 3 bucks and it’s dubbed as “The Ultimate Wikipedia Client for iPhone, It Will Make You Smarter!”. I wanted something with a great typography, focused on readability, that could remember my position at every launch but, most of all, that would allow me to keep multiple entries open at the same time.

Thank God I wasn’t the only one who wanted the perfect Wikipedia app, and I believe we couldn’t ask for any better, considering the developer who realized it. Sophia Teutschler from Sophiestication.com (developer of Coversutra, Tipulator and Groceries - no, you couldn’t ask for anyone better than her) has just released her new application called Articles which is hands down the new, best Wikipedia client for iPhone.

Why? Read on to find out why and get your credit cards ready.

Eternity Time Log, Task Management from a Bird’s Eye View . Review and Giveaway.

I don’t think people realize just how much of their lives are spent doing things. When I ask “Jane” how long it took her to write that report, I expect a response like, “Oh, just a few hours. No biggie!” Now admittedly no one would be too happy about wasting three hours for a stupid report, but for conversation’s sake, let’s roll with it. As much as she let those few hours roll of her back like it was no big deal, time is a bitch. And when we finally realize that, it just might help re-prioritize aspects of our life that we’re spending way too much time on.

Eternity Time Log is an application designed to not only log the time you spend doing things, but show you just where you may or may not need improvement. It’s an excellent tool of getting an overview of your life, and it’s helped me rethink what I do, what I can I do to improve my time management for certain tasks, and what I can cut back on. I think for a lot of people who’ll use this seriously, there’s going to be this eyebrow-raising revelation that tells you just how much time you’ve actually working compared to time spent with your kids.

SpringBoard Rotator Brings Landscape Mode To The iPhone Home Screen

If you ever wished to use your iPhone in landscape mode even when playing around with the home screen, soon you’ll be able to do it. iPhoneHellas has just published an exclusive preview of SpringBoard Rotator, a soon to be released in Cydia tool that will allow you to rotate your iPhone and enjoy a landscape-enabled springboard.

As you can see it doesn’t stop at rotating icons or other similar tricks, a landscape statusbar and wallpaper are injected into the iPhone, icons are stretched and same happens to the dock. Sure it needs more stability and more space between the icons (I’m not a huge fan of pages cluttered with 30+ icons) but it’s really promising. Check out the embedded video below.
