New Apple TV Isn’t Tethered to iTunes

So this new Apple TV. It doesn’t have USB, or a 30 pin connector as far as we know. But can you sync your own content? The answer is: yes you can.

John Gruber speculates that a device like WiFi syncing will be your ticket to home entertainment and file sharing, since the iPhone OS has never taken advantage of large storage capacities. Thank god we won’t be tied to just iTunes.

“No iPhone OS device has ever supported hard disk drives, and I doubt they ever will. […] It’s all about streaming and caching. You’ll get Apple-sanctioned content from the iTunes Store, but I’d wager you’ll be able to stream any H.264 content you want over the web, or from any Mac or PC on your home network.”

Now what I’m really interested in is whether the new Apple TV will ship with more than a remote: will it come with component cables needed to hook up to my ancient TV? Or will I have to buy those separate from Apple? A remote is guaranteed, but I’m curious. If there’s cloud based storage, can I resume those movies on my iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch? You know what I’m talking about right? Because that would be a direct counter-move to Google.

I guess we’ll wait and see, and hopefully it’ll be further discussed at WWDC (but don’t hold your breath).
