I have the 3GS MC model. I broke it the first day they have the jailbreak for it. It works. Make sure when you get done loading Cydia, you choose "Make My Life Easier" it will store your SHSH incase you have to re-jailbreak your phone in the future. Also, turn off upgrades in iTunes. Also, be careful. I pulled mine in and got a message,"iTunes needs to verify the carrier settings on your device" - click cancel. Have a nice day. @Mike, Yes. I have the 3GS MC model. I realized after almost a week of trying to upgrade my iphone that i followed the steps wrong…
So… voilà my experience:
-updated 3Gs with itunes to 4.0
->afterward i could not restore with custom ipsw
(you will be getting some 16xx error on itunes when you try to restore. Deleting the iphone software update folder did not work for me.)

solution:
-put your phone on dfu mode
-restore to 3.1.2 (use shift + restore to select 3.1.2 ipsw)
-jailbreak phone with blackra1n
(you can stop here if you want to keep your phone on 3.1.2)
-prepare your custom ipsw either with sn0wbreeze (windows) or pwnagetool (mac)
-put your phone on restore mode
-press shift + restore and select your custom ipsw
-be patient…

and TADA! you got your iphone back with ios 4
to unlock you can use ultrasn0w, add to cydia sources http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com
