I use NetNewsWire as my default RSS feeds reader on my Macbook. I find it simple and straightforward, proving a fair amount of features for the stuff I need. But I know many people still uses the web interface available at google.com/reader, which allows you to do some extra things like sharing and liking objects.

Today I was browsing Ember (also, be sure to follow me) and I stumbled upon some nice screenshots of what it seemed Google Reader running in a web browser, but with a custom style that looked like a Mac app. Userstyle, I said. I found the style, I posted a screenshot on Twitter and it turned out many of you guys liked it.

Here’s a brief guide on how to install the style.

Actually, I’m using two separate styles. They are “Google Reader: Mac OS X Snow Leopard” and “Google Reader: Prettier Add Subscription, Edit Tag” available over at Userstyles.org here and here. They basically style Google Reader so that it looks like a Mac app: there’s a blue-ish sidebar with folders, and some nice translucent blacks popups for the add subscription box and edit tags menu. See the screenshots below to have a preview.

To install the scripts, you have to install Greasekit first (go download) and then select “Firefox” in the Userstyles dropdown menu.

Enjoy!

    I made a SSB with Fluid and applied the Userstyle there. Now it’s a dedicated app and always stays perfectly in sync with Reeder on my iPhone. :)

    @Brad Rhine, That’s great Brad, I think I’ll do the same.

    @Brad Rhine,

    Thank you so much for pointing out Fluid. I did the same.

    @Federico,

    Thanks for the post. I have been using Gruml for my Google Reader client on the Mac and it has some quirks being a beta. It’s nice now to have it look like n application with the Greasescripts and Brad’s suggestion.

    @Brad Rhine, I couldn’t get these user scripts to work at all with Fluid. I’ve been using Helvetireader fine. Any idea whats going wrong?

    Federico Viticci Reply:

    @Daniele, You can either install Greasemonkey or Stylish on Firefox, or Greasekit on Safari. You just need something to load the custom style.

    Nice. I’ve been using Helvetireader until now, but will give this a try. I also use an SBB with Fluid, it’s really handy.

    Also, take a look at "Google Reader: Mac OS X Snow Leopard+ Delicious"
    http://userstyles.org/styles/19191p
    It adds some nice icons to your sidebar, though sadly it messes up this style http://userstyles.org/styles/16901

    If you’re a Firefox user…use Feedly with Google Reader. I’ve been using it for a year now, and love how it has improved my daily RSS reading.

    @Jesse Forest, I heard that there’s a Feedly for Safari now. Maybe I should give it a try.
