Apple has just issued a press release noting that the App Store hit 25 billion downloads (on Saturday) with the 25 billionth app downloaded being Where’s My Water? Free. The app was downloaded by Chunli Fu of Qingdao, China – that lucky person has won a $10,000 iTunes gift card for being the person who downloaded the 25 billionth app.
“We’d like to thank our customers and developers for helping us achieve this historic milestone of 25 billion apps downloaded,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “When we launched the App Store less than four years ago, we never imagined that mobile apps would become the phenomenon they have, or that developers would create such an incredible selection of apps for iOS users.”

Apple announced a short time ago that 25 billions apps have been downloaded from the App Store since it launched in mid-2008. Apple has updated their homepage with the above graphic and slogan of ”A billion thanks. 25 times over” and the App Store Twitter and Facebook accounts have also publicised the milestone. Interestingly, the graphic used by Apple varies depending on whether you are viewing an international version of Apple.com (such as Japan) or whether you see the standard US website.
Apple will announce within a few days, who the lucky winner of a $10,000 iTunes voucher will be. Users could enter the competition by either simply downloading an app or filling out a form on Apple’s website – the winner will be the person who downloaded the 25th billion app or the person who first filled out the form after the 24,999,999th app had been downloaded but before the 25th billion app.
In Apple’s previous App Store and iTunes competitions, Eddy Cue (Senior Vice President, Internet and Software Services) has called the winner and congratulated them on winning. Shortly after this has happened Apple releases a press statement announcing the download milestone and who the winner was. When Apple ran the competition to mark 10 billion apps downloaded, the winner initially hung up on Cue, thinking it was a scam call.
Just a little over 2 months since it celebrated its 1 year anniversary and milestone of 10 million users, Instagram has today revealed that they now have 15 million users. The announcement was made by Kevin Systrom during his speech at LeWeb ’11 today.
As the above graph demonstrates, Instagram has grown at a stunning pace, and continues to do so at an even more rapid rate. Systrom only recently revealed that Instagram had gained an additional 2 million members in the month of November alone.
Instagram is still a small operation with staff of only 10 people – but Systrom has revealed that they do have 2 staff members working on a (much anticipated) Android version of the app.

Rovio today announced a massive milestone for its hit game Angry Birds, revealing that the game has been downloaded more than half a billion times in less than two years. In a short video celebrating the milestone (shown after the break), Rovio also throws out some other interesting statistics including:
- #1 in 79 countries
- 266 billion levels played
- 400 billion birds shot
- 44 billion stars collected
- 200,000 years played Angry Birds total
- 300 million minutes played daily
The app, which originally launched on iOS on December 10th, 2009 has now gone on to be a worldwide hit and has spread to a large swathe of both mobile and desktop operating systems including Android, Symbian, Windows Phone, WebOS, OS X, Windows, Google Plus and more. Last October Rovio also released a special Halloween edition of the game called Angry Birds Hallloween, which was subsequently renamed ‘Angry Birds Seasons’ – it has seen regular updates featuring new levels that are themed by various holidays. This year Angry Birds Rio was released in March, this version tied in with the 20th Century Fox animated film Rio.

Apple today revealed to an Australian site, Current, that it has seen over 1 billion customers through its retail doors since it opened the first Apple Store in Washington just over ten years ago in May of 2001. Current got the information from Apple after they had contacted them to confirm the opening of the eleventh Apple Store in Australia, which is set to open this Saturday in Penrith, New South Wales.
Apple Retail has been in business for 10 years. During this period, we have had over 1 billion visitors through our doors, many of whom are new to the Mac, as the Apple Store is the best place to learn about all the latest products from Apple.
Apple also revealed that by the end of Apple’s financial year (ending September 25th) they plan to have 363 Apple Stores open, worldwide. Given that Apple currently has 330 stores open that means Apple is planning to open another 33 stores in just over two months – effectively that is a new store roughly every three days averaged out.
Our retail offering continues to grow, with Penrith the 11th store in Australia, since we opened Apple Store Sydney just three years ago. Globally we are planning to have 363 stores in fiscal 2011.
Current also asked Apple representatives what made their retail stores so popular and got a response that referenced service as being the “hallmark of every Apple Store”. In particular they pointed towards the fact that the response from customers has been “overwhelming” with 1 million customers taking an advantage of the Personal Setup offering in the last quarter alone.

Today marks the third anniversary of the launch of the (iPhone) App Store which launched on July 10, 2008. It launched simultaneously with what was then called the iPhone OS 2.0 software (now dubbed iOS 2.0) and was subsequently followed by the release of the iPhone 3G the next day, which came with iOS 2.0 and thus the App Store pre-installed.
The availability of third-party applications and an ‘App Store’ on the iPhone was certainly one of the most demanded features of the iPhone after it was revealed and launched in 2007. Whilst it hasn’t been revealed when exactly Apple decided to open up the iPhone to third-party apps (or if they had always planned for it), Steve Jobs was quoted in the New York Times shortly after revealing the iPhone in January 2007, as saying:
We define everything that is on the phone. You don’t want your phone to be like a PC. The last thing you want is to have loaded three apps on your phone and then you go to make a call and it doesn’t work anymore. These are more like iPods than they are like computers.
Since the launch of App Store, it has become one of the defining successes for the iPhone and Apple more broadly – becoming a cornerstone feature being used in a number of advertising campaigns. Most notable is the ‘There’s an App for that’ ad campaign which highlighted the wide array of apps available to consumers (jump the break to relive the first of those).
Over the past few months, the App Store has hit a number of milestones that reveals how successful it has been over the past three years. Just in the past week, Apple revealed that there had been 15 billion apps downloaded from the App Store. Recently it was also revealed that there are now over 500,000 apps available in the App Store (100,000 of which are iPad apps) – virtually a hundred-fold increase from the 500 apps that were available at the launch of the App Store in July of 2008. Apple has also been very keen to note at their WWDC conferences that they are paying out significant amounts of money to developers; at last count it was over $2.5 billion. The question is, where will the App Store be in a year from now, let-alone another three years? The pace at which it has grown is truly mind-boggling.

The unbelievably popular Angry Birds app has today received a new update, version 1.6.0, which brings a new episode for users to play with. The new underground episode, titled ‘Mining and Dining with the Burrowing Piggies’, is jam packed with another 15 levels to complete.
With a bottomless appetite, the bad piggies have burrowed deep in underground caverns to hide the eggs they stole from you. Use the landscape and geology to your advantage to chase the pigs out of their hiding holes, gather rare gems, and retrieve the eggs!
The new levels are cave themed and as usual there are jewels to find, but there is also new a gameplay mechanic – shoot at the hanging stalactites to “pop those pesky burrowing piggies”. Apart from the new levels, Rovio has tweaked some existing levels that were stonewalling people. The app update is available for both the iPhone version version and iPad version of Angry Birds.
Meanwhile, Peter Vesterbacka CEO of Rovio, spoke at the openIDEAS Conference in Europe today and revealed that the Angry Birds games are now seeing over a million downloads per day. You may recall that Rovio revealed that over Christmas Day last year it saw its most successful day ever with one million downloads – now that’s a daily occurance. In recent times it had also surpassed 250 million downloads.

Backflip Studios, the developer behind the popular iPhone games of Paper Toss, Ragdoll Blaster 2 and Strike Knight today announced that their mobile games have been download more than 100 million times – as a comparison, Angry Birds has been downloaded over 200 million times. It notes that roughly 80% of the downloads have originated from the iPhone, with about 20% from Android.
Backflip has around 25 million monthly active users, which is already up from 20 million in December last year, even more impressive is the 2.5 million daily active users that Backflip entices across its entire network of games. Roughly a third of the company’s revenue comes from App Store sales whilst another third comes from advertising (last October advertising was worth half a million dollars per month for Backflip) and another third from in-app purchases. Backflip’s success isn’t slowing down either, its revenue and user growth is between double and triple what it was just a year ago and its free games generate more than a billion impressions a month.
The Backflip team, which is self-funded and has 23 employees, is ramping up for a number of game releases coming this summer. Launching today was Strike Knight HD, the iPad version of the popular bowling game, and then there will Shape Shift, Backflip Solitaire and Boss Battles. Most, if not all, will initially be offered for free, following the success of Backflips ‘Summer of Free’ promotion that drew the company a huge success.
Just after midnight this morning, the iTunes App Store approval team pushed through a batch of app submissions, making the total number of submissions exceed 500,000 apps. It means that in the 34 months since the App Store opened in July 2008, there have been just over half a million apps published to the App Store.
To celebrate the event, Chillingo (developer), 148apps (mobile app blog) and Chomp (search company) created an epic infographic. It’s full of a tonne of interesting factoids such as: Angry Birds stayed at number 1 on the paid apps list for 275 days, the App Store launched with 500 apps, each developer submits an average of 4.6 apps and so on.
The actual number of apps available for download is currently closer to the 400,000 mark because of various replacement and withdrawals of the past 34 months. We also know that at least 75,000 of the apps are for the iPad – a figure revealed in late March.
