I usually do not read books about Apple, the web, or design related topics. There are enough weblogs and people on Twitter linking to all kinds of content about more or less everything, so I usually don’t need additional resources in the form of printed paper. When I need to delve into the technical details of a particular topic, I’ll pick up a book so that I can soak up that in-depth knowledge. And it usually is safer to buy technical books, because you can ensure that the text it contains is professionally well researched, written, and edited by people who care about the subject, thus the chance of reading erroneous information is quite low. I especially want that kind of comfort when it comes to quite precarious subjects like art (and its “subgenres” like typography and architecture) or company ethics and philosophies. You need a strong education in history, development, current techniques, and standards of creation in the respective fields to discuss them precisely. Call me conservative, but I want to read such explanations on printed paper, written by people with years of experience and knowledge.

During the last three weeks, I was on a circular trip throughout the United States. It was my first time I got to see the country. Besides stunning cities and beautiful landscapes, I also got to see many Apple location highlights, including the 5th Avenue Store in New York City and the Yerba Buena Center Of The Arts in San Francisco, which in my mind will always feature the colorful Apple banner promoting the iPad presentation in 2010. Just blocks down the road from the YBCA, inside the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art museum store, I found the book I’m about to present now: “Apple” by CLOG.

Insanely Simple

Like many others, I was disappointed by how Walter Isaacson’s official biography of Steve Jobs turned out. With the kind of access that Isaacson had to Jobs’ information, photos, close friends and colleagues, in my opinion, the author should have tried to linger less on the personal reasons that led Steve to walk barefoot around campus, and more on the ideas that shaped the great businessman and inventor that he was.

Steve Jobs was a polyhedric figure, and Isaacson tried to capture the “facts” of his life by focusing on several of his “passions” and “flaws” while, unfortunately, getting many of the facts that helped Apple become the company it is today simply wrong. Perhaps Jobs wanted the book to be a honest representation of “the man behind the business”. Perhaps Jobs’ idea of the book people wanted to read about him was inherently flawed, then. But the way I see it, Isaacson made a choice, independently from Steve, to put the spotlight on certain aspects of Steve’s life, while omitting key details and facts to better understand the Steve Jobs who founded and re-shaped Apple. Maybe “Steve Jobs” is perfect for Joan Baez, or one of Steve’s multiple ex’s in time. But it is not the book I, as someone interested in Steve Jobs the man and businessman, wanted to read.

Ken Segall’s new book, Insanely Simple, is, from this standpoint, a simpler book about Steve Jobs. Rather than attempting to provide a complete and exhaustive picture of Steve Jobs in each and every aspect of his life – something that, as we’ve seen with Isaacson, can be a little daunting – Insanely Simple focuses on one thing: simplicity. Insanely Simple, though Segall’s recollections, wants to help readers understand how some of Steve’s ideas and behaviors came to be by following the principles of Simplicity.

Insanely Simple doesn’t want you to know why Steve didn’t wash for weeks, was a vegan, didn’t speak to his daughter for years, or refused to properly park his car. For as much as those are intriguing (and, to an extent, posthumously voyeuristic) nuggets of information, they won’t make you think about why the products Apple makes are great and profitable – the numbers speak for themselves – when compared to the plethora of options that we have on the market today.

Apple makes consumer products. Insanely Simple focuses on this aspect of the company from two perspectives: Segall’s, who worked at the Chiat\Day advertising agency alongside NeXT and Apple for several campaigns, and Jobs’, whom Segall got to know (and work with) personally. The two perspectives often intertwine and overlap in interesting ways: in the concise, fluent style of the book, Segall takes you through an anecdote about the introduction of the iMac to his ad team, and in the next chapter he’s comparing the shopping experience of Apple.com to Dell’s website.

Segall certainly didn’t write Insanely Simple for “Apple novices”, trying to explain that an iPhone is made of glass or what FireWire stands for (something that Isaacson did in his attempt to produce the universal book about Jobs for the masses). While, say, a less tech-savvy reader like my mother would probably need to look up a reference or two when reading Insanely Simple, I believe anyone will be comfortable within the range of discussion laid out by Segall: how “a deep, almost religious belief in the power of Simplicity” always beats Complexity in every business-related decision.

The thing is, it’s funny how Segall’s sole focus on one core concept – Simplicity – provides a richer and more meaningful tapestry of insight into Jobs’ attitude and actions than Isaacson’s poorly researched technical explanations and sentimental departures. In describing the oft-abused “think different” mindset that drives Apple as a company, Segall tries to portray Simplicity as a “skill” that “takes practice”. Unlike Isaacson’s story of the man, Segall thinks “being brutal and being respected are not mutually exclusive”.

Without spoiling too much of the book, I think a couple of brief excerpts can better put into context the “Power of Simplicity” that Segall wants to turn into the selling point of his work (below, page numbers are reported as provided in the review copy I received).

Page 42:

He stopped cold. His eyes locked on to the one thing in the room that didn’t look right. Pointing to Lorrie, he said, “Who are you?” Lorrie was a bit stunned to be called out like that, but she calmly ex- plained that she’d been asked to attend because she was involved with some of the marketing projects we’d be discussing. Steve heard it. Processed it. Then he hit her with the Simple Stick. “I don’t think we need you in this meeting, Lorrie. Thanks,” he said. Then, as if that diversion had never occurred— and as if Lorrie never existed—he continued with his update. So, just as the meeting started, in front of eight or so people whom Steve did want to see at the table, poor Lorrie had to pack up her belongings, rise from her chair, and take the long walk across the room toward the door. Her crime: She had nothing to add.

Lorrie, as Segall remembers, only added to the complexity of the room. She wasn’t “necessary” in the sense that, for what Steve wanted to accomplish during that meeting, he didn’t think Lorrie could contribute in any substantial way. So he asker her to leave. Where’s the line between honesty and rudeness? Segall continues (page 47):

To this day I have a recurring fantasy when I find myself trapped in a big meeting going nowhere. I imagine what Steve Jobs would say and do if he were sitting in that room, enduring what I’m enduring. In my fantasy, it’s like having a really good seat for a matinee at the Roman Colloseum. Who would Steve verbally dismantle or eject from the meeting? When would he cut the presenter off midsentence and say it’s all bullshit? With all the talk about how rough Steve could be, it should be acknowledged that oftentimes he was only doing what many of us wish we could do. Steve saw no reason to be delicate when his time, and the time of everyone in the room, was being wasted.

How many times have you wished you could simply call out someone during a meeting like that, and tell him he’s not necessary? Self-imposed social rules and the fear of hurting someone else’s feelings often keep us from doing what we want to do with a simple and efficient way. And as Segall says, “showing a little of that brutal honesty at the right time is a pretty good way to earn respect— and keep those smart groups small”.

When he hit something or someone with the “Simple Stick”, however, Steve Jobs didn’t always have the perfect touch or vision. But whilst reading Isaacson’s take on Jobs’ human flaws I had the feeling those traits were treated as “mistakes” without another possible explanation – just “mistakes”. I like how Segall tries to explain Steve’s deviation from the Truth of Simplicity as a result of a “skill” that needs to be learned and practiced. Even Jobs’ mind could sometimes be obfuscated by the appeal of “options” and “extras”; but because he was a visionary that understood the nature of Simplicity better than most people at the company – he could “see a spark in there that nobody else sees” – eventually Simplicity always found the way back to Steve’s vision.

The Ultimate Efficiency

In a way, Segall’s book is limited. It approaches the story of Steve Jobs at Apple with a very specific angle, it doesn’t follow a strict timeline of events, and it builds on the author’s theory that Simplicity leads to more prolific creative efforts with a constant flow of anecdotes and examples that, ultimately, aren’t “facts”. Segall doesn’t want to be a biographer, nor is he trying to put “the better book” about Steve Jobs’ life in the hands of customers. Segall wants to prove a point, and while the memories he uses surely contribute to solidifying his theory, in the end it is up to the reader to decide whether Simplicity really is the right key to understanding Apple’s success and a part of Steve Jobs’ persona.

I think Insanely Simple is honest. At $12.99 on the iBookstore (Amazon editions available here and here), you’re getting a clear, balanced recollection of events that focus on Simplicity, Steve Jobs, and the products and ideas that took place in between.

Insanely Simple may be “simpler” in terms of scope and chronological events, but it left me with a more complex, genuine necessity of reflecting more about Simplicity and its effects on Apple’s history than Isaacon’s book ever did.

Based on numerous interviews, the book offers exclusive new information about how Apple innovates, deals with its suppliers and is handling the transition into the Post Jobs Era. Lashinsky, a Senior Editor at Large for Fortune, knows the subject cold: In a 2008 cover story for the magazine entitled The Genius Behind Steve: Could Operations Whiz Tim Cook Run The Company Someday he predicted that Tim Cook, then an unknown, would eventually succeed Steve Jobs as CEO.

Remember when Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone way back in January 2007 by prefacing the reveal by first saying it was a “a widescreen iPod with touch controls”, “a revolutionary mobile phone” and “a breakthrough Internet communications device”? It certainly delivered upon those three pillars, but as the iPhone and iOS has evolved over the years it has become evident that the iPhone (and subsequently the iPod touch and iPad) is also an innovative and impressive portable gaming device. Gaming has become a big selling point for iOS devices and since the App Store launched there have been a number of truly great and innovative games that have both shown what the devices are capable of and offered unique experiences that weren’t available anywhere else.

Today, ‘Buttonless: Incredible iPhone and iPad Games and the Stories Behind Them’ has been released on Amazon. It’s a new book by Ryan Rigney that aims to introduce you to a selection of the very best iOS games and then peel away the curtain, revealing the story and people behind the games. To compile the book, Rigney selected 65 of the “best and most beloved” iOS games and then conducted over 100 interviews with the developers and designers of the games. The result is 244 pages of interesting ‘behind-the-scenes’ stories that are unlikely to be found anywhere else.

I got my iPhone 4S two weeks ago, and have been experimenting with Siri and my best American accent since then. In spite of the software still not supporting maps and directions in Italy (more countries, including Italy, will support Siri in 2012) and weather requests, I’m having my fun in playing around with Siri for things like messages, notes, emails and Wolfram Alpha questions (I thank Americans for giving me a reason to convert their units to the metric system). Siri makes for the perfect iPhone demo to non-iPhone users, but impressive presentations aside it’s actually a great tool to quickly “do stuff” that would require looking at your phone and manually interacting with apps otherwise. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve already asked Siri to send messages to my co-workers while I was driving, change songs, call my girlfriend, or create new calendar appointments.

A few days ago I was sent a link to “Talking to Siri: Learning the Language of Apple’s Intelligent Assistant” by TUAW’s Erica Sadun and Steven Sande. I’ve read the book using the Kindle app on my iOS devices and Amazon’s CloudReader on the web and, let me tell you, it’s a great book to learn more about Siri.

At first I was skeptical — why would I need a book when Siri is so intuitive? It turns out, Erica and Steve have put together an impressive collection of things Siri does that I didn’t know about, also explaining with a friendly and familiar style (if you’ve been reading TUAW, which I do) how you should ask things to Siri. The book is organized in sections, covering every system app that’s integrated with Siri as well as built-in tools such as Wolfram Alpha and Yelp. Erica and Steven have also included lots of screenshots and descriptions, so you’ll be able to immediately understand and see what they’re referring to in describing Siri. It’s an incredibly pleasant read for new iPhone 4S users, and a nice handbook to get started with Siri. Without spoiling much, let me just say that I’ve learned a lot about things you can ask Wolfram (built into Siri), how to keep adding new items to a note, sunrise and sunset times and recurring reminders.

“Talking to Siri” covers in great detail every possible combination of commands Siri supports, providing a comprehensive guide to know more about what Siri can do for you. You can buy the book on Amazon as Kindle edition.

In just a few days time, on Monday next week, the much anticipated biography of Steve Jobs will be released – today a number of media organisations were given advance copies of the book and have now shared some details about the book and what Jobs reveals about himself. Both The New York Times and the Associated Press start off their articles by discussing an excerpt from the book in which Jobs reveals that he delayed surgery for nine months after discovering he had a neurendocrine tumour. It’s a relatively rare form of pancreatic cancer that typically grows more slowly and is generally more treatable. Jobs delayed the treatment in favour of alternative methods from a vegan diet to acupuncture and even visited a psychic before deciding to have surgery in July 2004.

Isaacson, quoting Jobs, writes in the book: “`I really didn’t want them to open up my body, so I tried to see if a few other things would work,’ he told me years later with a hint of regret.

The book covers a wide variety of topics from Jobs’ life from his personal relationships, work at Apple, relationships with competitors such as Bill Gates and Eric Schmidt amongst many other topics. In its article, the AP reveals details about a section of the book which describes “the unravelling of Jobs’ relationship with Eric Schmidt”. Jobs was apparently furious when HTC released a phone in January 2010 that contained many of the popular features of the iPhone. He believed that Google’s actions amounted to “grand theft” and as a result Apple sued.

I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong,” Jobs said. “I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.

The New York Times also includes a more interesting detail about how Jobs’ attention to detail extended to nearly everything, from planning and approving every detail in his medical treatment to a luxury yacht he began designing in 2009. The boat isn’t yet finished but in a style reminiscent of Apple Stores across the world, its sleek and minimalist and features 40-foot-long glass walls.

Fascinatingly the Huffington Post writes that in the biography, Jobs reveals that he had offered to design political ads for President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign – despite being “highly critical” of the administration’s policies. In a meeting with Obama in the fall of 2010, Jobs told him that “you’re headed for a one-term presidency”, insisting the president be more business friendly. Jobs gave the example of high regulations and unnecessary costs of opening up a factory in the US compared to China.

Jobs later told the author that he wanted to do for Obama what the legendary “morning in America” ads did for Ronald Reagan.

In the history of Apple, Inc. the role of the company’s third co-founder, Ronald Wayne, is often overshadowed by the genius of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, who built the very first Apple I personal computer and unveiled it at the Homebrew Computer Club. Ronald Wayne was the “adult supervisor” in the early days of Apple, the middle-man between Jobs and Wozniak whom they could trust in case of any disagreement. Wayne contributed to the first Apple logo, and drafted the initial partnership agreement to establish the company. He was given a 10% stake in Apple which, however, he sold for $800 after a few weeks. He later received an additional $1500 for giving up on any claim of ownership in Apple, thus bringing his original 10% to $2300 worth of “profit”, whereas if he stayed on Apple until today his 10% would be worth $35 billion.

Today’s Ronald Wayne says he doesn’t regret his decision, made “with the best information available at the time”. This, and another anecdotes from Wayne’s past and subsequent ventures are detailed in Adventures of an Apple Founder, an autobiography available for $9.99 on the iBookstore, as well as Amazon in paperback format. There are many pictures of Steve Jobs, and perhaps one of the most iconic is the scraggly bearded CEO posing for the camera, hand up to his chin as he imagines Apple’s next greatest device (at least I like to think that). The image will also be making an appearence on the cover of Walter Isaacson’s biography of Jobs (previously: The Book of Jobs), can be seen on the Barnes & Noble storefront with a publication date set for November 21st. You can currently preorder the hardcover for $20.40 (list price is $32.50), with B&N’s digital eBook availalbe for $14.99.
