Cydia Is Coming To The Mac

Well, well. Look what we have here. We’ve been hearing rumors all week about the Mac App Store launching soon, we found out that the upcoming store won’t allow Mac developers to generate promo codes and won’t feature in-app purchases and Game Center integration, Apple clarified its position on demos and trials.

Now Jay Freeman, a.k.a. Saurik, creator of popular alternative store Cydia for jailbroken devices, told the attendees of 360|MacDev that Cydia is coming to the Mac.

Cydia had an amazing run so far, it has been used by more than 10 million devices and it features some amazing tweaks, apps and extensions of iOS we cover just about every day. But Freeman feels like Cydia may be a great contribution to the Mac platform, too, and so he announced that it’s launching “within weeks”.

We don’t know what kind of tweaks and mods could be sold into Cydia for Mac, mostly because the Mac is a customizable platform out of the box. Perhaps Cydia will be aimed at offering easy installation of themes, system mods and tweaks without having to go through all these processes manually? I can tell you, installing custom themes on a Mac is an awful experience. Perhaps Cydia can fix this, among other things.

As usual when it’s about Saurik and Cydia, we can’t wait. [via TUAW]
